I gave you back the results from your Unit 1 Essay, and I talked about areas for improvement. Here are some key areas that everyone can improve on:

• Memorize the checklist of required elements for the 1st paragraph from the "Recipe for Success" handout. Really go over the entire checklist prior to the next essay, and include those items.
• Make sure that you ANALYZE the source! Paraphrasing the source is not analysis. For ideas as to how to analyze text-based sources, please study the Analyzing Quotes handout.
• Be proactive! If you didn't do well on this essay, please come see me in tutorial, sooner rather than later. We can go over your essay and I can give some tips to help you improve.

I gave you the remainder of the class period to work on homework. Remember you have your "Philosophies of Industrialism" booklet due tomorrow, and your Chapter 4 Key Terms and Questions are due on Wednesday.

Make sure that you print off the PowerPoint (4-6 slides per page) and add it to your notes. We also started looking at basic economics, such as scarcity, economic systems, the basic economic questions, factors of production, economic values. I gave you back the results of your Unit 1 Final Exam. I gave you some advice on how to structure your 1st paragraph for your Unit 1 Essay. On Monday, you have your Unit 1 In-Class Position Paper, which is one of the types of written response assignments you will be expected to write for Part A of your Diploma Exam. I gave you the essay sheet at the end of class, you are allowed to prepare notes on the bottom quarter of this sheet and bring it with you into the Blenheim Room on Monday. The notes must be hand-printed/hand-written and can only be below the line clearly marked on the essay question sheet. Here is the text-based source:

To what extent should we embrace the ideological perspective(s) in the source?

Use this weekend to prepare ideas, arguments, specific and detailed evidence to support your position. You are not allowed to write the essay ahead of time or anything like that, but prepare for it. Use the essay outline sheet that I have e-mailed to you, and start organizing your essay. Go back over the "Recipe for Success" as well and make sure that you follow the checklists of what needs to be in each paragraph of your essay (particularly that first paragraph). Also, look over the "Anlalyzing Quotes" handout for advice as to how to analyze a text-based source. Good luck!

We started looking at the French Revolution in the time remaining, and we sort set the stage for the French Revolution by looking at the structure and organization of French society on the eve of the revolution. I recommend that you read Chapter 2 over the weekend, but don't start the key terms or questions from Chapter 2 yet since they are due on Thursday of next week.

Social 20-1 World Geography Test Study Guide

This test will take place on Friday, September 17th. It is simply a country identification test. You will be given a world map with certain countries identified and you need to be able to write out what country it is. Here are the countries that may appear on the test:

• any of the EU countries (there are 27 countries in the EU, a map of the EU is in your textbook on page 265)
• any of the NATO countries (there's some overlap here with the EU, but not all EU countries are members of NATO)
• any of the G8 countries: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United States, and the United Kingdom
• full members of MERCOSUR: Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and other associate members or countries that are achieving membership in MERCOSUR, such as: Venezuela, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador
• to ask you to know ALL of the countries in the African Union would be cruel, so we'll focus on countries that came up last year or will likely be in the news this year: Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Libya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Zimbabwe
• other very important countries that will be in the news this year, or that we'll be talking about, or get mentioned in your textbook: Cuba, Mexico, Jamaica, Serbia, Georgia, China,

• be able to answer any of the questions from the Unit 1 Worksheet (hopefully you have quality answers to study from!)

With all of my classes today I briefly introduced myself (more about that after the long weekend), started talking about the course content (I gave you all course outlines) and I went through some classroom rules and expectations (see yesterday's post). We'll start the looking at course content on Tuesday.

September 2

I thought that I would post some of my classroom rules and expectations of behavior on the blog this year. Also, I will also write down some ground rules for using the blog this semester.

Classroom Rules/Expectations of Behavior:

I think that I have very simple, straight-forward classroom rules and expectations. I will be discussing these in class tomorrow, but here's a quick recap:

• Please be on-task during classroom time (visit later)
• You must wear your visual ID around your neck during class time, no exceptions!
• No cell phones; if your parents really need to get in touch with you, they should call the office. Please don't bring cell phones to class, or if you do, please remember to turn them off! Yes, you have some new freedom this year with regard to electronic devices, but not in the classroom!!
• Please don't listen to music on MP3 players or iPods during class time, UNLESS I have given you permission to do so.
• Be polite. You should be listening during class lectures or when your classmates have questions to ask (you might have some of the same questions).
• Be on time. If you are late, please enter the classroom quietly and apologize for being late. If the door is locked, I have started the lecture or there is a class presentation in progress; I will open the door and let you in as soon as possible.
• Clean up after yourselves. Please don't leave garbage on the floor. I like my classroom fairly neat and tidy.
• Don't bring junk food to class. Healthy snacks only. Or you could always wait until lunchtime.
• You may chew gum in class on the following conditions: don't chew like a cow, I don't want to see the gum or hear you chewing it, that's just gross.
• Late assignments: 10% is deducted for every day an assignment is late. If you have an excused absence, then there is some flexibility with this rule.
• Please make sure that a parent or guardian calls the school to have absences excused. If you miss a test due to an unexcused absence you will be assigned a mark of "zero".
• I will be contacting parent/guardians if you have unexcused absences.
• Please adhere to the school's academic honesty policy which is on the back of your course outlines.
• If you are going away on holidays (please do not schedule holidays during examination periods in January and June), please let me know in advance. I can prepare materials for you, let you know what you'll be missing, and even give you handouts in advance. This way you won't feel "lost" when you come back from holidays.

• If you feel the need to identify yourself, or clarify which grade you're in, please use your initials and your class and section (for example, K.G. in Social 20-1).

Today was the last day of classes for Summer school. You were a great group of students, I really enjoyed teaching you.

You wrote your Final Exam Part A today, and you received your final marks in 10-2. I hope that you returned your textbooks today in the Main Foyer.

For the first part of class you wrote your Final Exam Part A (Written Response Assignments). You will get the results of these two writing assignments back tomorrow, as well as see how they have affected your overall mark in the course, since these written response assignments count for 7.5% of your final grade in Social 10-2.



After the break you had time to put the finishing touches on your study guide that you will be allowed to bring in to tomorrow's Final Exam Part B. We will be playing a game of review Jeopardy tomorrow, and then writing Part B after the break. You will know your final grade in Social 10-2 tomorrow before you leave. You can return your textbooks at the school tomorrow if you'd like, make sure that you have your receipt with you.

Homework checks represent 5% of your final grade in the course, so it is important. I wrote out a writing guide for tomorrow's Final Exam Part A on the blackboard. Today was yet another busy day in Social 10-2, here's what happened:

Social 10-2

You wrote your Chapter 1-2 Quiz at the beginning of the class. I collected your Chapter 2 Key Terms and Questions and your "global connections" map. I went through some notes on media transnational corporations, and discussed some of the other companies that they owned and controlled. Keep in mind, with media transnationals, they tend to be involved in various types of media: newspapers, magazines, book publishing, TV, cable TV, satellite TV, movies and film production, and Internet services. This is different than other TNCs, such as McDonald's, Wal-Mart, Nike or Toyota, they don't own and control media outlets. Make sure that you know the difference between TNCs and media TNCs! I also gave you some notes on homogenization and the universalization of popular culture, as well as the CBC/SRC, CRTC, and CAVCO. We talked a little bit about "cultural protectionism" as well. You wrote your World Geography Test today as well. Tomorrow, you have some homework due, your Chapter 3 Key Terms and Questions are due.

Social 10-2

Today was another busy day. We played "Global Bingo" and collected names of classmates and at least one of their global connections. I did a homework check on your Chapter 1 Key Terms and Questions, and on your "global connections" chart. We looked briefly at collective identity and individual identity, and then watched the film "Whale Rider" to see examples of collective identity among the Maori people. You have some homework this weekend, your Chapter 2 Key Terms and Questions are due on Monday. Your "global connections map" is due on Monday as well (please see the instructions below). Also, Monday is an important day because you have a couple of quizzes on Monday. You have your World Geography Test on Monday (please see the study guide below) and you have your Chapter 1-2 Quiz (key terms quiz, please see the study guide below).

Instructions for Global Connections Map

Here are some reminder instructions for the map:

• People on the map should be represented by circles, color the circles and make sure there is a number beside each circle
• Make sure that you have colored and labelled the 20 different countries (color the entire country), these countries represent the 20 items that you found for homework and put into your chart
• Make sure that you have labeled every country that your classmates have a connection to, in other words, if they told you that like a band from Finland, you need to represent them with a circle and number on your map, AND you have to label Finland too.
• Choose different colors to represent your different categories (food, clothing, electronics, entertainment)
• Make sure that you have a detailed key on the back of your map (reproducing your 20 item chart's information with color codes for the different categories)
• Make sure that you have a title for your map
• No border is necessary
• No compass rose is necessary
• You don't need to color the oceans or bodies of water (if you feel the need to color them, simply do a blue outline of the land masses that touch the major oceans and seas)
• Don't forget to color ALL of a country (for example, Alaska is part of the USA and should be colored, don't forget to color the islands in the Arctic Ocean that are part of Canada if you have a connection to Canada)
  

World Geography Test Study Guide:

The format for this exam is pretty straightforward, you will be given a blank map, labeled with numbers. You must be able to identify the countries that are labeled on the map. You will be given an answer sheet, and a list of countries that appear on the map. You need to be able to identify the countries. Here are the countries that you need to know the location of:

• NAFTA members (Canada, USA, Mexico)
• G8 countries (Canada, USA, Great Britain, France, Italy, Germany, Japan, Russia)
• some EU countries (there are 27 countries in the EU, here's a hyperlink to the map of the EU)
• full members of MERCOSUR: Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and other associate members or countries that are achieving membership in MERCOSUR, such as: Venezuela, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador

We did a lot of beginning of the semester/administrative tasks at the beginning of the class. I have sent you an e-mail, so please check your e-mail inboxes today when you get home. If you have a Hotmail account, you may have to check your junk mail folder and add me as someone that you want to get e-mail messages from. We went through different perspectives of globalization today, by looking at how various people and organizations define globalization. As you can see, there are many different perspectives on globalization. Some people feel that globalization is beneficial and others feel that globalization creates problems. Over the course of the semester, we will be looking what your perspective on globalization is, in other words, do you feel that it has more benefits or drawbacks? We also looked at various images, political cartoons and photographs that illustrated aspects of globalization as well. You have a couple of homework assignments tonight:

• You must find 20 items in your house (from categories such as electronics, clothing, household goods, food, cars, or miscellaneous) from 20 different countries
• Put these 20 different items into a chart format (as I wrote it on the blackboard)
• Please do not have more than 5 items from any one category
• Also, you must complete your Chapter 1 Key Terms and Questions for tomorrow
• Make sure that you read Chapter 1!!

Classroom Rules and Expectations

Classroom Rules/Expectations of Behavior:

I think that I have very simple, straight-forward classroom rules and expectations. I will be discussing these in class, but here's a quick recap:

• Please be on-task during classroom time (visit later)
• No cell phones (as per school policy); if your parents really need to get in touch with you, they should call the office. Please don't bring cell phones to class, or if you do, please remember to turn them off!
• Please don't listen to music on MP3 players or iPods during class time, UNLESS I have given you permission to do so.
• Be polite. You should be listening during class lectures or when your classmates have questions to ask (you might have some of the same questions).
• Be on time. If you are late, please enter the classroom quietly and apologize for being late. If the door is locked, I have started the lecture or there is a class presentation in progress; I will open the door and let you in as soon as possible.
• Clean up after yourselves. Please don't leave garbage on the floor. I like my classroom fairly neat and tidy.
• Don't bring junk food to class. Healthy snacks only. Or you could always wait until lunchtime.
• You may chew gum in class on the following conditions: don't chew like a cow, I don't want to see the gum or hear you chewing it, that's just gross.
• Late assignments: 10% is deducted for every day an assignment is late. If you have an excused absence, then there is some flexibility with this rule.
• Please make sure that a parent or guardian calls the school to have absences excused. If you miss a test due to an unexcused absence you will be assigned a mark of "zero".
  I will be contacting parent/guardians if you have unexcused absences.
• Please adhere to the school's academic honesty policy.
• DO NOT go on holidays!

I am also offering a Diploma Exam Review Session on Wednesday, June 23 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. This will be a structured review to help you with Part B of your Diploma Exam.

You broke into small groups today to brainstorm arguments and evidence related to a text-based source (similar to what you would encounter on an essay). After we brainstormed and recorded the ideas, I split you into two large groups, one arguing in favour of the perspective in the source and the other against it. In these larger groups you thwn had to decide what arguments you would develop and what group members would responsible for their development. Both classes put together an essay outline, which I have sent to you by e-mail. Have a look at it tonight. You have Part A of your Final Exam tomorrow. Please go directly to the Blenheim Room tomorrow morning.

We finished off formulating arguments and evidence for yesterday's economics-themed essay, and today we looked at a source that a more political theme to it. I broke you into five groups and each group was responsible for developing its own essay outline. I collected the outlines at the end of class, I will scan them and send them to you tonight. I have sent the economics-themed essay outline to you, so please look for it. You have your Social 30-1 Comprehensive Final Exam tomorrow. Be prepared!

I split you into small groups to brainstorm arguments and examples for an economics-themed essay. Of course the text-based source will be different on your Diploma Exam, but I think it's useful to get into positional thinking and generating arguments and potential evidence so that if you were given an essay with a similar theme you might be able to write on the subject. We'll finish this essay outline tomorrow, and then we'll move on to a political-themed essay outline tomorrow. Please remember that your Chapter 13-14 Study Guide Questions are due tomorrow, and that your Comprehensive Final is on Thursday.

We looked at the Social 30-1 curriculum/program of studies today to see what concepts were emphasized in the document. As I went through the curriculum, I asked you to write down certain key ideas. I have sent you the 10 page study guide that I made up for Social 30-1 and 30-2, so please check your e-mail accounts. Also, once again, have a look at the Student Writing Samples for 30-1 and for Social 30-2. It should give you a better insight into expectations for Part A of the Diploma Exam. We looked at the issue of government surveillance and privacy issues today by watching a short video on video surveillance in Great Britain. I also gave you a BBC article on CCTV cameras and other forms of surveillance. I gave you the results of your Unit 3 Final Exam and a print off of all of your test results for the entire semester. I asked you to make a decision of what test score you want to cancel out with your Comprehensive Final Exam. Your Comprehensive Final is on Thursday, June 10th (it's 70 multiple choice questions). Your Chapter 12 Key Terms and Questions are due on Tuesday and your Chapter 13-14 Study Guide is due on Wednesday, June 9th.

Your Comprehensive Final Exam is next Thursday (June 10th), you want to do well on this exam because it will be used to wipe out your lowest test result score this semester. You will get the results of the Unit 3 Final tomorrow in class, and I will have a print-out of all of your test results from this semester so you can make a decision as to which test score to replace.
