October 26

We finished watching "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee", and then wrote a short quiz on the film. I gave back your concept maps to you, and reminded you that you have this weekend, and a couple of days next week to complete your Imperialism Research Project, which is due on Wednesday. Please see yesterday's post for some useful research links.

We did a simulation today on the outbreak of World War I today. Some of you may have come to the conclusion that the outbreak of the war was inevitable. This is the belief of many historians, but in the coming days we'll be looking at different perspectives on this issue. I would like you to keep in the back of your mind the issue of responsibility for the outbreak of the war. Your next position paper topic centers around whether or not the Allied powers were justified in assigning blame for the outbreak of WWI on Germany. I also gave you your results for the Industrialization and Ideologies Unit Final at the end of class. Please see yesterday's post for the study guide for your Imperialism Unit Final, which is next Thursday. Study this weekend. Make sure that you have read the two chapters in your textbook that deal with the theme of imperialism.

Yes, the year is fine.

Well, that's a tough one, especially since I'm not sure which country you have, but I can give you some general answers. Social conditions would include culture, so that would include language, traditions, religion among other things. Do you know anything about these topics having read up on your country's history? Political conditions could include how the country is organized politically, is it a tribal organization for example? Are there kings or chiefs? Is it a paternal or maternal dominated society? Economic conditions would include how people make a living. Is it an agrarian society? If so, what sort of crops do they have? Does this help?

That's way too much for me to type out here. Please send me an e-mail requesting the assignment sheet, and then I can send you an e-mail with the assignment sheet as an attachment.

Remember that Pakistan was part of India until independence in 1947. In 1947, India is split from Pakistan (which at the time was East Pakistan and West Pakistan). So for date of independence you can use the following date: August 14, 1947. As far as colonization, you can use the year 1857, since that was when most of present day Pakistan came under direct rule by the British government. Does this help?

The rubric that I could send out would be for the illustrated timeline part of the project. The other part that you will be evaluated on would be a peer evaluation. I will try to send those out as soon as possible.

for background info about "date of colonization" and "date of independence" can we just provide the year or do we have to write a paragraph and explain everythning.

also, for "imperial powers" we just write the country or do we have to explain too?

and in the timeline, do we HAVE to provide events that are related to imperialism or can we provide other general events too?

for background info about native people in section a, can we just include point form notes or does it have to be in complete sentences and paragraphs.

You don't have to explain the date of colonization and date of independence, you just need a year for each. For imperial powers, just write down which country or countries controlled that colony. I think for the timeline you're looking for significant events, many of these events will have a colonial connection, whether you realize it or not.

Point form notes work well.
