May 2

We finished watching "Shipbreakers" today, and then I continued to deliver the "Globalization and Sustainability" presentation that I started yesterday. In all likelihood, I will finish that presentation on Monday. Please have a look at the upcoming important dates:

  • TNC Dossier Assignment is due on Monday, May 5th
  • In-Class Position Paper is on Wednesday, May 7th
  • Unit 3 Part A In-Class Writing Assignment is on Friday, May 9th
  • Unit 3 Final Exam (multiple choice test) is on Wednesday, May 14th

We started class today by watching the opening sequence from "Saving Private Ryan" so you could get some sense of difficulty and casualties incurred as a result of the Normandy invasion. I then gave you some time to work on your Events of WWII booklet. Please remember that your Causes of WWII booklet is due on Wednesday, May 7th. Have a great weekend!

For the Dossier assignment, is it okay if we just copy the timeline straight from the website????

Does the time line have to on a poster? or can it be on a word document.

what if our profucts are too big to fit into our folders...because its going to be hard trying to fit a sweater into a folder...

Typically last semester students incorporated the timeline into the dossier (they folded out of the dossier). The easiest way to do it would be using Word, but make sure that you check the marking guide for this assignment and make sure that you're meeting all of the requirements!

The easiest thing to do is have pictures of the artifacts to put into your dossier. So for example, if you're doing The Gap, Inc. you would have pictures of their clothing, not actual articles of clothing.

For the TNC project one of the questions that we have to answer is how the corporation affects the people's lives socially. Would how the corporation treat its employees be a viable topic?

Yes, as would advertising and impact on popular culture.

Mr. Gilchrist, there was a question on our dossier requirements that said "how did this trasnational corportation evolve into a prime example of economic globalization?"
does this include positive tactics as well as negative? (i.e. positive-improving technology negative- exploitation of workers)

Mr.G, if a company is charged with tax avoidance, can we put it as a political effect for the how has the expansion of this transnational corporation affected people's lives? THanks

What you'd be looking for there is expansion of the TNC (mergers and acquisitions), in addition to positives and negatives associated with the TNC. There is some overlap with this heading another one from this assignment, the perspectives on the TNC (positive and negative).

Yes, you could I guess. What sort of contributions has the TNC made to political campagins?

Mr. Gilchrist, is it okay if we make the dossier like a book so you have to flip pages? or does it have to be folder-like?(once you open it, that's it)

Mr. G, is it okay if we combine "how has this TNC affected people's lives economically, socially and politically" with "how has this TNC affected lives of cutomers" and "how has this TNC affected people in developing countries" so that there would only be how has this TNC affected lives of cutomers" and "how has this TNC affected people in developing countries"<--- these two headings not 3?

is it okay if we say the info in point form?

Sure, it's called a dossier assignment, but as you could see from some of the examples from last semester that I showed you, there's room for creativity.

Yes, that's fine.

Mr. Gilchrist, you said make a map of the countries in which the TNC has some sort of relationship, but I can't seem to find the exact countries except for a few. It said it has 90 countries, and I don't know if I have to find out individually for all the countries in the world to see if there is a trade connection but I find that really tiresome and...hard. Im doing the Hershey Company.

No, you don't have to find every country where Hershey chocolate bars are bought and sold. It might work to have on a world map where the Hershey headquarters are, where some of the manufacturing takes place and what countries does Hershey get their cocoa from. There is some great information on the Hershey corporate website on how they are working to improve the lives of cocoa farmers that you might want to check out. It's under the "Making a Difference" tab on the Hershey's main site.

For one of the questions, "Examine its early development and expansion (be sure to examine mergers, acquisitions, and spin-offs)", we only need to write the major ones, right? And is it okay if I right a lot of aquisitions, but I can seem to find a lot of mergers and spin offs.

Mr. G, there's this site where it has alot of links and each of the links are the articles. Do i have to list each individual article web site address or is it okay if i list the main page where you can find all the articles. (the main page just has these list of articles that you have to click in order to go in)

No, you have to individually credit each article/web page.

you know how in the corporate website there are a lot of tabs?
do we have to write each individual web address or can we just write the corporate website?

If you found information under a particular tab on a corporate website, to not cite it and then include information found there it's plagiarism. Always cite ALL of your sources!

do shareholders count as customers?
(i'm on question what effect did it have on customers?)

I guess shareholders could potentially be considered customers, but I'm thinking about your average non-shareholding customer.
