October 29

After some technical difficulties with one group, we settled in to watch "Rabbit Proof Fence". It doesn't look like I'll be able to show you the Canadian residential school situation film "Where the Spirit Lives". We will finish this movie tomorrow. Please be ready to present on Wednesday your Imperialism Research Projects. In all likelihood we will start doing presentations in small groups either on Wednesday or Thursday, so please make sure that you are ready to go. Here are some useful research links for the Imperialism Research Project:

  • CIA World Factbook
  • Nation Master
  • Countries of World (e-book, use the password: chartwell to access it, click on Gale Virtual Reference Library, then click on the hyperlink next to Nation and World, then click on Countries of the World and Their Leaders) this is the e-book that I showed at the beginning of our time in the library.

We watched a few documentaries on the outbreak on WWI, "Doomed Dynasties" and "Clash of the Generals". Please check your e-mail tonight, I will be sending you a chart that summarizes "theatres of war" in WWI; it corresponds to Chapter 13 in your textbook. I would also like to remind you about your Imperialism Unit Final, which is on Thursday. Make sure that you have read Chapters 10-11 in your textbook. Study "The Imperial Age" PowerPoint presentation (see below), the "Motives for Imperialism" booklet, "Imperialism in Action" booklet, and your African Colonies map as well.

Here are the following topics for this unit final:

  • What is imperialism?
  • "Old" imperialism vs. "New" imperialism
  • The role of the Industrial Revolution in Imperialism
  • Imperialism in Asia
  • Imperialism in Africa
  • "Scramble for Africa" (map of Africa), study your map!
  • Egypt and the Nile (Suez Canal, Muhammad Ali, importance of the Suez Canal
  • Central Africa-Congo (Belgian Congo, Livingstone, Stanley, Leopold II)
  • The French in the Congo (Brazzaville, Timbuktu)
  • The German empire in Africa
  • Fashoda Crisis (French vs. British, know details)
  • Berlin Congress
  • South Africa (know details of the invasion of Zululand, and The Boer War)
  • Key People, Key Events in Imperialism

for the social 10 imperialism project
does everything have to be in complete sentences or can they be in point form (other than part A)?
also, how indepth do you want us to go for part A? theres a lot of information to cover there, but you gave us a one page limit, so i'm having problems deciding what i should keep and what i should delete

do we hand in everything or just the timeline for the imperialism project?

-social 10.

For the social 10 project, is it completely based on peer evaluating? And for the timeline, should we mark when the event started and when it ended?

Everything could be in point form, including Part A. Whatever works best for you, if you want to do Part A in full sentence/paragraph form that's fine. If it's more than one page, that's fine.

Everything should be in one folder/duotang, including the timeline. Yes, everything will be handed in on Wednesday.

No it's not completely peer evaluated. I will be marking it too, especially the timeline part.

Anyone who lives there before Europeans arrive would be considered Indigenous peoples.

Other than the sources that I've already mentioned, I can't recommend any other sources. Possibly some book sources?

Mr. G I'm having trouble confirming my date of colonization for Venezuela. One source I have says it was in 1509, another in 1520, and another in 1522. Do you know which one is correct.

Hey Mr. G i was just wondering. For this project, we're focusing on how the EUROPEANS wanted to take over these countries right? And it's just the europeans? Do we have to talk about the other wars that took place in those countries with different countries? Like the america's?

--------------------
1522 is the correct date. Be careful with the independence date, they gain their independence from Spain in 1811, but in 1830, they gain independence from Gran Colombia (Colombia and Venezuela were joined once).

It's not just Europeans, the Americans also had colonies.

Yes, you may.

for the timeline for the social 10 imperialism project, the description says from date of colonization to date given, so does that mean we CANT start from BEFORE european colonization?

Sure, you can start before colonization. Just don't get too bogged down in the country's past.

Mr. Gilchrist
I am having trouble finding the colonization date for Australia. I have checked approximately 10 different sources however none of them have a date, they just give a range. Some of the sources say colonization started when Sydney was formed in 1788. Should I just use that date? Could you help me here.
The independence date is also somewhat confuzing. A few sources mention that Australia gained its independence in 1986 with the Australia Act. Is that really correct? Has Australia only been an independent country for 21 years?
Thanks

For Australia, you can use the year 1770, that was when Cook claimed Australia on behalf of England. In 1788, a penal colony is established in I believe New South Wales. Australia has independence from England in 1901, but it doesn't get control of its foreign affairs until the passage of the Statute of Westminster in 1931 (same as Canada; up until this point, if Great Britain declared war, Australia was at war too, as was Canada). The Australia Act in 1986 is very similar to the Constitution Act of 1982 that Canada passes; with the Australia Act all political ties are cut from Britain, and Australia doesn't have to get permission from the British Privy Council anymore to make changes to its constitution. I hope this helps. If it doesn't just ask tomorrow, and I can explain further.
