You wrote the Unit 1 WRA II Essay today in class, until the break. I'll try to get these essays marked as soon as possible. We went through some examples of mixed economies today (Canada, Sweden, Norway), and I showed you a couple of videos, which you should have taken notes on, namely "Dutch Treat" and "Welfare a la carte". I also started the PowerPoint lecture "The Evolution of Modern Liberalism" which I will finish off tomorrow. We have the lockdown drill tomorrow at 8:30 a.m., after the drill is over, you will write the Ideological Reaction to Industrialization Test (please see the study guide below). The Unit 2 WRA I Chart Assignment is due tomorrow.

2. Be familiar with key concepts introduced in Chapters 3 and 4.
3. The Industrial Revolution:
  • understand fundamental economic, social and political changes that were caused by the Industrial Revolution

  • understand the differences, advantages and disadvantages of the cottage system and the factory system

You handed in your Unit 1 WRA I Chart Assignment today at the start of class. You wrote your Chapter 1-2 Test today at the beginning of the day. I went through a lecture on "The Development of Classical Liberalism" today. We also started talking about some basic economics today, including the basic economic systems (command economy, mixed economy, and market economy), and the business cycle. You also wrote another exit slip at the end of the day. Tomorrow is a big day, you'll be writing the Unit 1 Final Exam at the start of the day, and will finish the day off in the computer lab writing your Unit 1 WRA I. Please complete the Chapter 3 and the Chapter 4 Google Doc by Monday. You need to read, highlight and annotate the French Revolution and Industrial Revolution sections of this PowerPoint presentation tonight.




Upcoming Important Dates:
  • Unit 1 Final Exam is on Friday, July 5th
  • Unit 1 WRA I is on Friday, July 5th


The Unit 1 Final is a 50 question multiple choice test. It will be written on Friday, July 5th. Make sure that you study the following:

  • Chapter 1 and 2 Key Terms (please see the Chapter 1-2 Test Study Guide for a list of terms) 
  • Study the Ideology Notes (Black Gold School District PDF file, on the Social 30-1 wiki, and in your Social 30-1 course books, pages 17-22)
  • Review Hobbes, Locke and Rousseau (view of the nature of human beings, how society should be organized, people's role in society; notes on page 3 of your study booklet)
  • Study the 19th Century Political Spectrum
  • Study the 20th Century Political spectrum
  • Study the political-economic grid
  • Know the values and ideas associated with the various ideologies (on the 19th century and 20th century spectrums)
  • Study the Individualism and Collectivism charts that is in your study booklets
  • you need to be able to apply your knowledge and understanding of these concepts/ideas
  • there are a lot of source-based questions on this exam!

I did homework checks on your Chapter 6 Key Terms and Questions, and recorded your Chapter 4 Key Terms and Questions homework checks from last week. I showed you two videos today from the TV news magazine show 60 Minutes today, "Dutch Treat" and "Welfare a la carte" which gave you some case study information on Netherlands and Norway. You should investigate these two countries on your own in greater detail because they can serve as case studies for mixed economies. If you missed class today, you need to get the advantages and disadvantages charts that students took on these two videos. Please remember that you are writing your Ideological Reaction to Industrialization Test (which covers Chapter 3 material and part of Chapter 4), please check out the study guide below.
