I wrote notes on the board about the leaders of the Soviet Union, so if you missed class today, you need to get these notes from a classmate. We talked about perestroika, the Four Modernizations, and market socialism today as well. We also started talking about different types of dictatorships. I continued the PowerPoint presentation today called "Ultranationalism in WWII". You can go through the last 8 slides on your own. We watched an excerpt from the movie "Pearl Harbour" to look at the Japanese surprise attack that pulled the USA into the Second World War. 


You wrote the Social 30-1 WRA II position paper today in the Red Lab. Tomorrow, Thursday, October 24th, you're writing the Market and Mixed Economy Test (please see the study guide below). We did a little review of how to write the Social 30-1 WRA II position paper today. If you missed class today, you need to see me tomorrow during tutorial to go over how to organize your essay. I also strongly recommend that you check out my PowerPoint lecture on the IB 30/35 wiki called "The Evolution of Modern Liberalism" in preparation for the Market and Mixed Economy Test this Thursday. I taught you a mnemonic device today about the League of Nations (FAILURe), make sure to get these notes from a classmate if you missed class today. We watched the BBC 20th Century History series video "Why Appeasement?", and while you watched the video you should have completed the film study, which took most of the period. We watched the A & E Biography "Stalin: Red Terror", and as you watched the video, you should have answered the questions in the film study sheet in your Social 30-1 course books. You should have read the Marx, Lenin, and Stalin notes in your course books last night. You should have also worked on the Chapter 5 Google Doc last night as well. Make sure that you read Chapter 5 this weekend, and print off some of these Google Docs that you have been working on this month. We continued looking at the command economy today. I also went through the PowerPoint lecture "20th Century Rejection of Liberalism". You should prepare yourself for a position paper on Tuesday, and the theme of the source will be economics. We also did a couple of practice cartoon interpretations at the end of the class (right before the exit slip), and I'm posting the cartoons that we looked at here on the blog. You wrote another exit slip at the end of the day too.

You wrote the Unit 1 WRA II Essay today in class, until the break. I'll try to get these essays marked as soon as possible. We went through some examples of mixed economies today (Canada, Sweden, Norway), and I showed you a couple of videos, which you should have taken notes on, namely "Dutch Treat" and "Welfare a la carte". I also started the PowerPoint lecture "The Evolution of Modern Liberalism" which I will finish off tomorrow. We have the lockdown drill tomorrow at 8:30 a.m., after the drill is over, you will write the Ideological Reaction to Industrialization Test (please see the study guide below). I went through a review of the boom and bust cycle, and then the Keynesian economic response to booms, recessions and depressions. We kept reviewing monetary policy and fiscal policy. I showed you a couple of videos from the BBC 20th Century History series, namely, "Boom and Bust" and "FDR and the New Deal". We went through, as a class, the notes on "Using Monetary and Fiscal Policy to Stabilize the Economy" and "The Great Depression in the USA". You also did some exit slips today, one before the break, and one at the end of the day. We went to the Blenheim Room to work on the Chapter 6 Google Doc, and to prepare for tomorrow's position paper.
