I split you into two sides for tomorrow's debate on the following topic: BIRT globalization is beneficial to the world's cultures. I gave each side in this debate a different reading with different perspectives on this debate. We spent most of the class period in the computer lab putting together a Google Doc to organize your arguments and evidence for the debate.

Much of today's class was spent watching videos from the BBC 20th Century History series and note-taking. We watched "Boom and Bust" and "FDR and the New Deal", and while you were watching these videos you should have taken notes. If you missed class today, please get these notes from a classmate. We also went through the "Case Study: USA in the Great Depression" notes in your 30-1 coursebooks. Your Chapter 4 Key Terms and Questions are due tomorrow.

You wrote your American Revolution Test today. I'll post the results on PowerSchool later this evening. We'll talk about the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights tomorrow. You're going to be writing a Paper 3 on Tuesday, October 17th on the HOTA Topic 12: The Great Depression and the Americas. Today, we went down to the Red Lab to work on a class Google Doc that had about 12 different Paper 3 questions on it. You were supposed to read the appropriate chapter from the Hodder textbook (PDFs on the the IB 30/35 wiki), so it's in your best interests and put together point form notes that would help you write an answer/essay on those questions. The questions that you're going to get on Tuesday will cover similar themes as the ones on this Google Doc so it's in your best interests to prepare for this essay. You also have the Market and Mixed Economy Test on Wednesday, October 18th still.

We continued our examination of the French Revolution today by watching a History Channel documentary. We weren't able to finish it, so we'll continue it in tomorrow's class. I collected your TNC Dossier Assignments at the beginning of class today. If these assignments are handed in late, there is a 10% penalty per day that it is late. I started a new lecture today on "Globalization and Sustainability". The part of the lecture that I delivered dealt with sustainability, environmental stewardship, ecological footprint, and the sustainability of a particular industry important to economic globalization: container ships. We started watching the NFB film "Shipbreakers" today, and we'll finish it off tomorrow. By Friday, you will receive your Unit 3 WRA II essay question sheet. Please remember that you'll be writing the Unit 3 WRA II Essay on Wednesday, May 18th.

We watched a couple of videos from the BBC 20th Century History series called "One Man's Revolution" and "China Since Mao". I also recommended that you read some of the higher level reading articles in your Social 30-1 booklets today, "The Road to Prosperity" (on China), and another one from Unit 2 material ("The Causes of the Global Recession"). Also, we analyzed a couple of political cartoons out of The Economist that were published in 2009, on the 60th anniversary of the People's Republic of China. Remember, that China is our case study of an authoritarian state in Social 30-1. China is still a single-party state, in other words, only the Communist Party of China can exist, and all other political opposition is suppressed. China employs market socialism, wherein the state still largely controls the means of production and the degree of state owned enterprise's in the Chinese economy. I talked about CNOOC's purchase of Nexen as an example of a state-owned oil company purchasing a Canadian company. There are three big state-owned oil companies in China: CNOOC, SinoPec and PetroChina, so this links back to what I said about the economic reforms that have been introduced in China, and yet the government largely controls the economy and means of production. I also briefly touched about entrepreneurship in China, and used two companies TaoBao and Alibaba, both owned by Jack Ma.

I showed you a video from the U.S. History series called "Reconstruction and Segregation". You should have been able to take extensive notes on this subject. I then went through a little bit more of the "Reconstruction Era" PowerPoint presentation. I think the video did a great job of explaining "the Great Compromise of 1877", and how Rutherford B. Hayes (Republican) became President of the United States. We'll talk about Reconstruction historiography tomorrow, and start talking about preparing for a Paper 3 on Civil War and Reconstruction.

You must also do the essay outline that is part of this assignment for Tuesday, December 9th. Please remember that your Comparative Government Assignment is due next Monday.

You wrote a current events quiz at the beginning of the period. You should make sure that you study this weekend for your upcoming assessments next week. On Thursday, October 17th you are writing a 3-part exam on the Civil War and Reconstruction. There will be 30 multiple choice test, a matching section and a document analysis assignment. On Friday, October 18th you will be writing a Paper 3 on the Civil War and Reconstruction. Please make sure that you check out all of the notes on the IB 30 wiki under the U.S. Civil War section. Make sure that you check out the study guide on the wiki (the dates have been changed). Make sure that you've read Chapters 11-13 in The United States and Its People.
