We went through the sample Paper 1 that you got yesterday, and talked about your answers to questions 9-11 that you worked on last night. We then tackled question 12 in small groups and discussed possible ways to approach the mini-essay. You're writing the Paper 1 on Japanese Expansionism tomorrow. You'll have 5 minutes to read the sources and 60 minutes to write it. We finished off the CNN documentary "Scream Bloody Murder" today. I also collected your Unit 2 Research Projects as well. Tomorrow, we'll look at the Rwandan genocide in greater detail.


We'll finish preparing for the position paper tomorrow, and we'll move on to Unit 3 material tomorrow as well. Please work on your argumentation tonight, and start planning out what evidence you will use to support your position. You're writing the Unit 2 WRA II Essay on Thursday in the Blenheim Room. I did some review today for the Paper 1 and Paper 2. I didn't finish talking about the Paper 2 exam today, so that's where I'll start tomorrow. I shared a couple of Google Slides lectures, and an OPVL grid in Google Sheets. You should look at the Google Sheets for ideas on how to approach the OPCVL question on the Paper 1. I gave you some advice on what to review for Paper 1 and Paper 2. I'll try to get to Paper 3 tomorrow.


We started talking about essay writing today. I posed two questions to you: How would you convince a friend to come to Churchill? What arguments would you use to convince them? From there, you needed to generate a point form list of ideas to "sell" Churchill to your friend. We looked at the difference between argumentation and evidence, and we'll talk more about objectivity vs. subjectivity tomorrow. On Monday, May 7th, you'll be writing the Unit 2 WRA II Essay, so we'll continue talking about position papers/argumentative essays all this week. One week from today, on Tuesday, May 8th you'll be writing the Chapter 7-8 Test, you can find the study guide below.

You got back your Paper 1 on Case Study 2 today. I'll go through both versions with you tomorrow in class. We also watched Episode 3 ("Britain at Bay ") of WWII in Colour. I also gave you a small package of notes with maps on the European theatre of war. Today's film recommendation was "The Imitation Game" which tells the story of the breaking of the Enigma code.


You wrote Part A of your Final Exam today. You'll get the results back before you write Part B of the Final Exam on January 19th. Don't forget that you have your Unit 3 Final Exam tomorrow (please see the study guide below). I'll collect your Chapter 16 Key Terms and Questions tomorrow when I'm back in my classroom.


Please make sure that you have read Chapters 10-14. Please make sure that you have the following PowerPoint presentations, and that you study from them:

You got your Paper 1 on Case Study 1 (Japanese expansionism) back today. I went through areas that need improvement for the class as a whole. The rest of the period was spent in the computer lab preparing for tomorrow's debate on the following statement: "Hitler had a clear plan for achieving his foreign policy goals when he took power." You have already been split into two camps for this debate, side proposition (which agrees with the statement), and side opposition (which disagrees). Please don't forget that you have another Paper 1 this Friday (December 15th), where 1/2 the class will write on Italian expansionism, and 1/2 the class will write on German expansionism. Please review my lectures and the appropriate sections in your The Move to Global War textbook.



I finished off the PowerPoint presentation "Quality of Life, Human Rights, and Democratization" today. I gave you the remainder of class time to work on your Chapter 16 Key Terms and Questions. Your Chapter 15 Key Terms and Questions are due tomorrow (December 12th).

You're writing your Paper 1 on Case Study 1 Japanese Expansion (1931-1941) on Friday, November 24th. This is a FULL Paper 1, and you'll have 60 minutes to write it.

Take 30 minutes for each mini-essay, 60 minutes total. You will still be writing a Paper 1 in class on Friday, November 24th. We'll be starting Case Study 2 for Prescribed Subject 3 tomorrow.


We continued watching "The Corporation" today, and we'll be able to finish it up tomorrow, except for maybe in my Period 4 class (due to the length of the lockdown practice today). One week from tomorrow (Wednesday, November 29th), you'll be writing the Chapter 10-11 Test. The study guide will go up tomorrow on the blog.

We finished off the last topic in our first case study for Prescribed Subject 3 (The Move to Global War). We'll be doing some review tomorrow on the Japanese expansion in Asia in the Red Lab, please go there directly. We'll be starting the case study on Italian and German expansion on the road to WWII on Wednesday. Please remember that you are writing your Paper 1 on case study 1 on Friday, November 24th.


We finished watching the key parts of "Life + Debt" today. We moved on to a film study for "The Corporation", which we will watch in parts for the next few days. One week from Wednesday you will writing the Chapter 10-11 Test, so watch for the study guide to go up on Wednesday. The Chapter 10-11 Test will be on Wednesday, November 29th.

You started watching a documentary today called "Nanking". you'll finish up this film on Thursday. Tomorrow, you'll be going to the Red Lab to work on your Paper 1 assignment, which is due on Monday, November 20th.



Please make sure that you go to the Social 10-1 wiki and download a copy of the PowerPoint presentation "The Expansion of Economic Globalization". I will not be delivering this lecture in class. Print off a hard copy with 4 slides per page. You were given booklets on the WTO, IMF and World Bank today. These booklets have criticisms of these global financial institutions. You have a homework assignment from this booklet. You need to create a detailed chart on the advantages and disadvantages of the WTO. This WTO chart is due on Monday, November 20th.

November 3

Sorry, I didn't get around to posting this yesterday.



We were in the Blenheim Room today. I shared with you a sample Paper 1 so you could see some of the structure of the exam paper. It was missing a question 4 but other than that it had all of the elements of a Paper 1. Most of you were working on creating your own Paper 1 (remember this assignment is due on November 20th). I also gave you a copy of the Prescribed Subject 3 curriculum. Remember, you need to pick ONE bullet to focus in on, from either Case Study 1 or Case Study 2. I forgot to bring the scantron sheets to class to show you how well you did on the Economic Systems Exam.


I continued on with the lecture on "The Foundations of Economic Globalization" that I started on Wednesday. I didn't finish it, so I'll probably finish it off on Monday. Please remember that your Chapter 10 Key Terms are due on Wednesday, November 8th, and your Chapter 10 Questions are due on Thursday, November 9th.

You wrote your Unit 2 WRA I today in class. If you missed class today it is your responsibility to remind me that you need to write the WRA I. We're going to continue looking at "The Foundations of Economic Globalization" tomorrow.




You wrote your Economic Systems Exam today, and you'll get the results back tomorrow. We'll also get back into our Prescribed Subject 3 tomorrow. We'll be meeting in the Blenheim Room. I have a few sample Paper 1 exams that I'd like you to get some practice working on.

I went through the structure of the American political system. I also covered the electoral college system. We looked at some electoral college maps from previous presidential elections. Please read, highlight and annotate the presidential system section in your Social 30-1 study booklets. We'll talk about the system of checks and balances on Monday. Enjoy your weekend!


You wrote your Paper 1 today. We'll talk more economics on Monday. Please don't forget to complete the Great Depression Study Guide for Monday's class.

We covered "The Italian Invasion of Abyssinia" PowerPoint lecture today in class. You should be studying for your Paper 1, which is on Friday, November 27th. Please review using the PowerPoint notes, the 20th Century IB History Companion textbook (pages 13-76), and the Prescribed Subject 1 duotang. I gave you some time to read through the differences between unitary systems and federal systems. We also looked at various political terms, and started talking about types of democratic systems. We talked about direct democracy and representative democracy, including the parliamentary system and the presidential system. You had about 30 minutes to work on your Chapter 8 Key Terms and Questions (which are due on Monday, November 23rd). This is also the date of your Unit 2 Final Exam. You are writing your Unit 2 WRA II Essay on Thursday, November 26th.

You wrote your Market and Mixed Economies Test today, and you will get the results back tomorrow. One week from today, you will write your Economic Systems Exam which covers all of the economic systems (command, mixed and market). Please remember that you must hand in your Chapter 5 Key Terms and Questions tomorrow. Also, if you were away last Friday (on the Phys. Ed. 30 camping trip for example) you will be writing your Ideological Reaction to Industrialization Test tomorrow. You can find the study guide for this test here.  


This exam will be written on Thursday, October 23rd. It is a multiple choice question format test.
