You read over the section in your Social 20-1 coursebooks called "Was Appeasement a Good Idea?" We watched the BBC 20th Century History series video "Why Appeasement?", and while you watched the video you should have completed the film study, which took most of the period. We'll keep looking at the road to World War II tomorrow.

I taught you another mnemonic device today, this time to show you that the League of Nations was a FAILURe. You should be able to remember this mnemonic and be applied to two key case studies in the Interwar Years: the Japanese invasion of Manchuria, and the Italian invasion of Abyssinia. I also showed you a video from the BBC 20th Century History series called "Why Appeasement?" While you watched this video you should have answered the film study questions from your Social 20-1 course books. You also should have the section in your course books called "Was Appeasement a Good Idea?" and complete the focus task in this section. Tomorrow, we'll start talking about the rise of ultranationalism in Italy, Japan, and Germany.

I went through the Russian History Notes from your Social 30-1 course books. You must read in your course books the readings on Marx, Lenin, and Stalin (pages 107-114). You should read, highlight, and annotate these readings. I showed you a video from the BBC 20th Century History series called "Stalin and the Modernization of Russia", and while you watched this video, you should have taken point form notes on it. I gave you some time to work on your Chapter 5 Key Terms, which are due tomorrow (just the key terms). On Tuesday, April 2nd you will be writing the Market and Mixed Economy Test (please see the study guide below).

I started talking about the American Civil War today, and then started Episode 1 of the Ken Burns' The Civil War. We'll finish this video off tomorrow. I've decided to not to teach you specific battles in the Civil War, but rather look at the sectionalism between the North and South, and how the war ends, which will lead to the Reconstruction period. I also gave you back the 30-1 WRA I that you wrote while I was in New York for NHSMUN, this writing assignment was on the Cold War.

SOCIAL 10-1 UNIT 1 FINAL EXAM STUDY GUIDE:

Unit 1 Final Exam will be Wednesday, March 21st. The format for the exam is entirely multiple choice. It will consist of 55 multiple choice questions, 60-65% of the questions will be "source-based" questions, while the remainder will be simply knowledge and comprehension style questions. In other words, the source-based questions will use political cartoons, timelines, a chart or diagram, a graph, a reading, a photo or a map, and you will have answer questions related to that source. The source-based questions will be difficult to prepare for. You must have a firm grasp of the concepts and key terms that were introduced in Unit 1, because that will allow you to apply the knowledge that you have to answer the multiple choice questions.

Please study your key terms from Chapters 1-5, and the topics covered in that unit.

I finished off the last bit of the "Globalization and Sustainability" lecture today. I showed you short interview of Jeff Rubin from "The Hour", and his theory that if oil prices climb to triple digit rates that globalization becomes unsustainable. You got a chance to start working on your Chapter 15 Key Terms and Questions. We'll continue on with Unit 4 material tomorrow. Don't forget that your TNC Dossier Assignment is due tomorrow.

I showed you a video from the BBC 20th Century History series called "Why Appeasement?", and while you watched this video, you should have been taking notes on it. I finished off the "International Response to German Aggression, 1933-1940" lecture today too. I'll convert this into a Google Slides presentation and share it with you tonight.

We covered some more of the road to World War II today. I reviewed the Ruhr Crisis briefly, some factors that helped contribute to the Nazis coming to power, namely the Great Depression, and the connection between the number of unemployed Germans and the number of seats that the Nazis won in the Reichstag. As the economic crisis deepened, Germans tended to "vote for the extremes", voting more and more for communist party candidates or for the Nazis. We also look at the immediate road to World War II, specifically looking at the Munich Conference and the policy of appeasement. We watched a video from the BBC 20th Century History series called "Why Appeasement?" as you watched this video you were to fill in answers on the question sheet. Tomorrow we'll look at the "big picture" of WWII by watching a video called "Blitzkrieg to the Bomb".

This time you worked in smaller groups and made your own Google Docs to collaboratively write an analysis of previous Diploma Exam's WRA I. I went through part of the lecture on "20th Century Rejections of Liberalism" which focuses on why Stalin's USSR and Hitler's Nazi Germany rejected liberalism. I only went through the first half of the presentation on our case study for a communist totalitarian state: the USSR. Yesterday, we discussed the causes of World War II, and then started watching a video from the BBC 20th Century History series called "Why Appeasement?" We finished this documentary today. We then watched "Blitzkrieg to the Bomb" which should have given you a nice overview of how the war was fought in all of the theatres of war.

You wrote your Unit 3 Final Exam yesterday, and so you got the results back today. You had to make a decision as to which exam result you would wipe out with Thursday's Trial Final Exam. We finished watching "Blood Diamond" today. The "Blood Diamond" film study is due on Monday. Also on Monday we will be starting our Model UN conference on child soldiers. The entire period was spent addressing the IA. We went through the PowerPoint presentation on the IA as well. You selected your IA topic as well today. I think most of the topics are very good and with a little guidance you should be able to find resources to help get you through the IA. You;re writing a Paper 2 on the Dictatorships unit on Tuesday.
