I went through part of the "20th Century Rejections of Liberalism" PowerPoint lecture. You need to go through the Nazi Germany part of the presentation on your own. I still have letters to switch from 30-1 to 30-2, so if you want to switch, please pick up the letter from me so we can the paperwork completed. You were supposed to pick up the Unit 2 WRA I Chart Assignment today this assignment is due on Friday, April 5th (unless you're switching to 30-2). On Monday, April 8th, you're writing the Unit 2 WRA I (unless you're switching to Social 30-2, then I'll be teaching how to do the WA I, and you'll complete one in class). On Tuesday, April 9th, you're writing the Chapter 5 Test in class, please see the study guide below.

The Chapter 5 Test will be on Tuesday, April 9th. It is a 70 multiple choice question test (but it will be reduced down in number on the day). Please review the following:

2. Look at what I have emphasized in class (Causes of WWI, nature of WWI, armistice, Paris Peace Conference, Treaty of Versailles, the Interwar Years, rise of ultranationalism in Germany, Italy and Japan): this will be the emphasis of the test, there are several topics in your textbook Chapters 5-6 that WILL NOT be on this test, especially if it is event that occurs AFTER the events listed above (so things like Canada's role in Afghanistan, and Arctic sovereignty won't be on the test)

3. Focus your review on the following big concepts:

  • MAIN Causes of World War I
  • the nature of World War I (trench warfare, stalemate, total war)
  • the Paris Peace Conference (national interests in negotiating the treaties)
  • Woodrow Wilson's Fourteen Points (links on the blog, under Social 20-1 Links, CHECK IT OUT!!)
  • the Treaty of Versailles (terms of the Treaty of Versailles: GARGLe)
  • Hitler's violation of the Treaty of Versailles (chronology; order of events that violated the terms of the Treaty of Versailles)

You wrote your Market and Mixed Economy Test today in class. I will be marking this test during my prep period and posting the results on PowerSchool (hopefully it's working today). Your Chapter 5 Questions are due tomorrow. Please come to class quickly tomorrow so we can go down to the Main Gym together to hear our guest speaker.


We finished off the lecture on "Legacies of Historical Globalization in Canada" today. On Monday, October 29th, you will be writing your Chapter 7 Test. Please see the study guide below for this test. 

You will write this test on Monday, October 29th. This chapter test  will have three sections: a matching section, a multiple choice section, and a short answer section.

I also started a PowerPoint presentation on how to write a Paper 3 on the Civil War and Reconstruction. Please remember that you have a test on the Civil War and Reconstruction on Thursday, October 15th, and a Paper 3 on Friday, October 16th. I went through part of the lecture on "20th Century Rejections of Liberalism" which focuses on why Stalin's USSR and Hitler's Nazi Germany rejected liberalism. I only went through the first half of the presentation on our case study for a communist totalitarian state: the USSR. I showed you a video from the BBC 20th Century History series called "Why Appeasement?" While you watched this video you had to answer questions from a film study sheet that was in your Social 20-1 study booklet. I also had you do some small group work on the focus task from the "Was Appeasement a Good Idea?" reading in your Social 20-1 booklet. We also reviewed the mnemonic FAILURe for the League of Nations. Please remember that you are writing your Unit 2 WRA I tomorrow in the Blenheim Room. Please go directly to the Blenheim tomorrow, don't come to Room 111.

I went through part of the PowerPoint lecture called "20th Century Rejections of Liberalism". I only covered the section of presentation that covered the Soviet Union. You are responsible for reading the remainder of this lecture that covers Nazi Germany. You had the remainder of the class to work on your Chapter 5 Key Terms and Questions, which are due on Friday, October 17th.
This test is on Thursday, October 16th and it is a multiple choice format test. There are 70 multiple choice questions on the exam. Please study the following:

Most of today's class was spent talking about the Paper 1. You have a test on the American Revolution on Thursday, October 16th. Your Paper 1 on the Independence Movement in the USA is on Friday, October 17th. Please have a look at the Paper 1 section on the IB 20 wiki. I strongly recommend that you find some time to read pages 61-73 in your History of the Americas textbook, and the complete the OPVL chart activity (see page 73) based on Sources A to E on pages 71-73 in your textbook.
