We went through some key terms and organized these terms based on whether they were characteristics of parliamentary democracy, presidential democracy, both or neither. We then looked at the Modern History of China Notes from the Social 30-1 coursebooks, and watched a couple of videos from the BBC 20th Century History series called "One Man's Revolution" and "China since Mao". I started another lecture today called "The Imposition of Liberalism", I'll finish this one of tomorrow after you write the Unit 3 WRA I. You'll be writing the Unit 3 WRA I in Room 109. Social 30-1 students were split into small groups and selected a Diploma Exam Part A booklet, set up a Google Doc and proceeded to make a detailed essay outline for their selected WRA II position paper. Social 30-2 students worked on Assignment I today (they'll work on Assignment II tomorrow, and Assignment III on Friday). If you have a laptop at home, please bring it tomorrow, it will be better than using the laptops in the school laptop cart. Your school-awarded mark in Social 30-1 will be posted in HomeLogic by the end of classes today (at 12:15 p.m.). This mark counts for 70% of your final mark in Social Studies 30-1. The other 30% comes from the Diploma Exam, weighted equally between Part A (written component) and Part B (multiple choice). We finished off watching the film "Snowden" today at the beginning of class. I hope that this film was thought-provoking for you, unfortunately since this is a summer school course I couldn't give you an assignment to go along with the movie. Have a look at the discussion questions that are part of the film study guide and see how you would answer them. We moved on to the computer lab to start working on some Diploma Exam preparation for the Part A, namely the major writing assignment (WRA II essay). We'll do this tomorrow as well. You can always check out all of the WRA I and WRA II prompts from the Diploma Exam Review page on the Social 30-1 wiki too. You wrote your Unit 3 Final Exam today after the break as well. Tomorrow you have your Trial Final Exam which counts for 15% of your school-awarded mark in Social 30-1. The study guide for this exam is at the back on the Social 30-1 coursebooks. I also checked over your Civil Rights Movement Assignment today as well. Once you were finished writing the Unit 3 Final Exam we started watching "Shouting Fire" which deals with freedom of speech issues surrounding the First Amendment in the United States. I forgot to post a YouTube link to "Unconstitutional" yesterday, so you'll find that below. This documentary deals with the early days of the Patriot Act. You should also check out the reading from the BBC in your coursebooks on CCTV cameras in Britain.

You should also make sure that you go through all of the notes and activities in the Social 30-1 workbook. Please review the sections on how to write a WRA I, how to analyze political cartoons and other images and the "Recipe for Success" on the WRA II, and the propaganda techniques. 

There is also a VERY detailed Diploma Exam Study Guide at the back of your 30-1 study booklets. Go through the multiple choice questions in the yellow booklet that I gave you at the beginning of July, it will really help you out. 

Check out the review Prezis that are on the Social 30-1 wiki under Unit 1 and Unit 2. You'll have access to the Social 30-1 wiki in August, I'll remove you from the wiki after you write the Diploma Exams. 

Here are the dates for your Diploma Exam:

• Social Studies 30-1 Part A is on Thursday, August 4th (9:00 am to 12:00 pm; you can take an extra 1/2 hour to make it a 3 hour exam. This is strongly recommended, then you have 1 hour for the WRA I and 2 hours for the WRA II)
• Social Studies 30-1 Part B is on Monday, August 8th (9:00 am to 11:30 am)

Please remember that you are writing both parts of the Diploma Exam at Viscount Bennett Centre. Please keep in mind that it may take you longer to travel to this school than it did getting to Churchill.

SOCIAL 30-1

You wrote your Unit 3 WRA I in the Blenheim Room today. You also wrote your Unit 3 Final Exam today. I showed you a documentary on free speech and the First Amendment rights in the U.S. The HBO documentary was called "Shouting Fire". As you watched this video, you should have taken notes on the case studies in the video (Ward Churchill, academic freedom post-9/11, conservative think-tanks going after left-wing academics; Debbie Almontaser, Principal of Khalil Gibran International Academy getting into trouble over t-shirts labelled as "Intifada NYC"; ACLU defense of Nazi Party of USA's march through Skokie, Illinois; Chase Harper's t-shirt protest against the "day of silence"; the fight to publish the Pentagon Papers; protests against at the Republican Nation Convention in New York City.)

You have your Trial Final Exam tomorrow, and it potentially will count for marks, especially if it's not one of your two lowest test scores. The study guide is in the back of your Social 30-1 workbooks.

I gave you back your results on the Trial Final Exam, and your mark going into the Diploma Exam. We played some Kahoot games too. I'll see you tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. for our flex class review of Social 30-1 writing assignments. You should be going through the Diploma Exam Review page on the wiki, and reviewing all of the PowerPoints on the wiki from all of the units. If you haven't done so already, go through the Unit 1 and Unit 2 review Prezis.
