We watched a couple of videos today, one on the electoral college and the other on gerrymandering. I also skimmed through the lecture on "Political Challenges to Liberalism". Tomorrow, we'll be watching a documentary on Vladimir Putin (case study fro oligarchy). Just a friendly reminder: the comparative government assignment is due next Tuesday (December 3rd).

I showed you a video today called "The Road to War-Italy" today at the start of class. You must read pages 130-135 in your textbook The Move to Global War tonight. I also want you to get a little Paper 1 practice in, so I'd like you to do the Paper 1 Practice for Question 11 for Case Study 2 on page 139 in the textbook. Pick either question 2 (regarding the importance of economics for Italy's foreign policy under Mussolini) which uses Source I (page 114) and Source K (page 116) OR, you can do question 3 (concerning the international response to Italy's invasion of Abyssinia) which uses Source U (page 124) and Source X (page 126).

We continued studying Unit 3 material today. We covered different types of electoral systems (FPTP and PR). We re-cast the 2019 Canadian federal election with PR. We also looked at the structure of the American government and their system of checks and balances. We watched a video on the electoral college system (see below), and we talked about the comparative government assignment which is due next Tuesday (December 3rd).

We looked at the concept of national self-determination today (I didn't specifically refer to it as such, but that was the concept that was covered today). You did a reading on Kosovo, and we watched a CBC News in Review on Kosovo declaring independence. We also looked at another case of a region of Spain (Catalonia) that has had a referendum on independence from Spain, and the results of that referendum vote.

I went through the lecture on the Italian invasion of Abyssinia today. I broke you into small discussion groups to go over your  homework assignment from last night where you completed a ranking (and rationale) of the international responses to the Abyssinian crisis, from most severe response to least severe response. Tomorrow we should be able to start wrapping up Italy, and begin moving on Germany.

I had you read the section in your coursebooks on the "Modern History of China", and then I showed you a couple of videos from the BBC 20th Century History series: "One Man's Revolution" and "China Since Mao". You had some time to work on your Chapter 9 Key Terms and Questions (these are due on Tuesday, May 21st). Don't forget that your USA-Canada Comparative Government Assignment is due tomorrow. You're writing the Unit 3 position paper on Wednesday, May 22nd in the Blenheim Room. Some of you may be missing this class due to the PE 30 camping trip, if so, you will have to write it when you get back from the trip.

We continued Unit 3 material today. We went through the electoral college system (and we watched a couple of YouTube videos on the subject). We also talked about gerrymandering. One of the key concepts that I want you to connect to these two topics (electoral college and gerrymandering) is the will of the people. Is the will of the people reflected in the outcome of elections that use the electoral college system and have gerrymandered districts? Couple these concepts with super PACS and "dark money" and you have some interesting criticisms of the American political system. Your Chapter 10 Key Terms and Questions are due on tomorrow. Your USA-Canada Comparative Government Assignment is due on Thursday, May 16th. You can work by yourself, or with a partner (no groups of three!).

We finished off Part 2 of the A & E Biography "Fatal Attraction of Adolf Hitler" today. I also tried to get through the rest of the Hitler and Nazi Germany lecture. Please remember that you're going to be writing a Paper 2 Essay on Wednesday, December 5th. All of the essay questions will be about either Stalin or Hitler. 

It is strongly recommended that you not only go through the rest of the Google Slides in the "Joseph Stalin and the USSR" lecture, but also read Chapter 2 in your Authoritarian States textbook. There is a great of information and detail in this textbook, and it has some great summary charts on Stalin's rise to power (p. 30), Stalin's establishment of an authoritarian state (p.45), and Stalin's domestic policies and their impact (p.56), and Stalin's foreign policy (p. 62). 

It is also strongly recommended that you not just rely on the Hitler Paper 2 Review Google Slides lecture. You should also read and take notes from Chapter 3 (p.67-120) in your Authoritarian States textbook. There is a lot of detail and IB examiner's tips in this book, so you use it!

We started off Part 2 of the A & E Biography "Fatal Attraction of Adolf Hitler" today.  Please remember that you're going to be writing a Paper 2 Essay on Wednesday, December 5th. All of the essay questions will be about either Stalin or Hitler. I handed back your IA Phase II today.

It is strongly recommended that you not only go through the rest of the Google Slides in the "Joseph Stalin and the USSR" lecture, but also read Chapter 2 in your Authoritarian States textbook. There is a great of information and detail in this textbook, and it has some great summary charts on Stalin's rise to power (p. 30), Stalin's establishment of an authoritarian state (p.45), and Stalin's domestic policies and their impact (p.56), and Stalin's foreign policy (p. 62).

You wrote the Unit 2 Final Exam at the beginning of class today. Results of this exam have been posted into HomeLogic already. I went through the structure of the Canadian political system, we talked about federalism and the division of powers between the federal, provincial and municipal levels of government. We looked at different electoral systems, and focused in on first past the post (FPTP) and proportional representation (PR) and how the 2015 Canadian federal election would looked differently IF Canada employed a PR system. I also went through the "Political Challenges to Liberalism" PowerPoint lecture, focusing primarily on the non-democratic systems section. The first half of the lecture is a nice review of the democratic systems concepts that I have already taught to you. We finished up in the computer lab working on one of the three following activities: 

1. Chapter 10 Key Concepts and Activities (Google Doc)
2. Unit 2 WRA II Essay prep (Google Doc)
3. USA-Canada Comparative Government Assignment (if you're working with a partner, it would be easiest to do this as a Google Doc to collaborate. You're going to hand in a hard copy of the assignment)
