IB 20 HOTA

We finished off Part 1 of the A & E Biography "Fatal Attraction of Adolf Hitler" today. I continued a lecture on Hitler today. It looked like a lot of you had printed off this lecture, if you didn't, please make sure that you do it tonight and bring it to class next week. Please remember that you're going to be writing a Paper 2 Essay on Wednesday, December 5th. All of the essay questions will be about either Stalin or Hitler. I collected your IA Phase III today.

It is strongly recommended that you not only go through the rest of the Google Slides in the "Joseph Stalin and the USSR" lecture, but also read Chapter 2 in your Authoritarian States textbook. There is a great of information and detail in this textbook, and it has some great summary charts on Stalin's rise to power (p. 30), Stalin's establishment of an authoritarian state (p.45), and Stalin's domestic policies and their impact (p.56), and Stalin's foreign policy (p. 62). 

It is also strongly recommended that you not just rely on the Hitler Paper 2 Review Google Slides lecture. You should also read and take notes from Chapter 3 (p.67-120) in your Authoritarian States textbook. There is a lot of detail and IB examiner's tips in this book, so you use it!

I went through a lecture on "Political Challenges to Liberalism" today, with my emphasis being on the non-democratic system case studies in the later half of the presentation. I also started showing you a video on Vladimir Putin from the CBC show The Fifth Estate called "Putin's Long Shadow". I'm including this documentary below, please finish watching it. Your Canada-USA Comparative Government Assignment is due on Monday, December 10th.

I showed you a video today called "Globalization is Good", and as you watched this documentary you should have completed the film study questions. I did a homework check on your Chapter 12 Key Terms and Questions tomorrow.

Here's the class schedule for next few weeks: 

• No classes on Monday-Wednesday (May 7th to 9th) due to IB Exams(English, History and Math HL exams)
• Thursday, May 10th and Friday, May 11th we have classes
• We have class on Monday, May 14th
• No classes on Tuesday-Thursday (May 15th-17th) due to IB Exams 
• Friday, May 18th PD Day (no classes) but there's IB Exams
• Monday, May 21st is Victoria Day (there may be IB Exams, check your schedule)
• Tuesday, May 22nd everybody should back to class.

You wrote your Unit 2 WRA II Essay today in Room 104. You should be able to get results back for this essay next week. Make sure that you working on your Unit 2 dossier assignment/Prezis, the due date is coming up fast. You are writing your Chapter 7-8 Test tomorrow. Please see the study guide below.

You got your Unit 2 WRA II assignment back today at the beginning of class. I want you to go to the following website: https://canada.isidewith.com/ tonight, We'll have a discussion about your results tomorrow. We had a class discussion around three different questions:

• Should the voting age be lowered?
• Should voting be mandatory?
• Should everyone over the age of 18 be allowed to vote?  

Next, I split you into four groups to summarize some of the viewpoints in the classroom, and then we had a whole class discussion about the issues related to these questions. Please remember that your USA-Canada Comparative Government Assignments are due on Friday, May 13th. You are strongly encouraged to work with a partner on this assignment. One week from today, your Civil Rights Movement is due one week from today (May 16th).

We did a class discussion today where everyone was given two Post It notes to write out their answers to two of the following questions:

• Should the voting age be lowered?
• Should voting be mandatory?
• Should everyone over the age of 18 be allowed to vote?
• Is the first past the post system democratic?

Next, I split you into four groups to summarize some of the viewpoints in the classroom, and then we had a whole class discussion about the issues related to these questions. You were encouraged to take detailed notes on the following videos from the BBC 20th Century History series: "Boom and Bust", and "FDR and the New Deal". Tomorrow, we'll talk more about the Roosevelt administration's response to the Great Depression.
