Social 30-1

We looked at how the Canadian government uses monetary and fiscal policy to stabilize the business cycle today. We also looked at how the Obama administration used Keynesian ideas to battle the 2008 global recession. We'll start looking at Sweden and the mixed economy tomorrow. Remember, we're moving to the next quadrant on the economic-political grid: democratic socialism.

We watched a video from the BBC documentary series "Days that Shook the World" on the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.  You also should have completed the reading on "The Causes of World War I" from your Social 20-1 coursebooks.  I did a homework check on the Chapter 4 Key Terms and Questions today. I also collected your Unit 1 WRA I Chart Assignment today as well. Your Chapter 3-4 Test is this Friday (October 4th). Please see the study guide below.  

CHAPTERS 3-4 TEST STUDY GUIDE:

This test will be on Friday, October 4th. It will consist of a matching section (10 key concepts) and a short answer section.

• make sure that you study the PowerPoint presentation "Contending Loyalties"
• make sure that you have read Chapters 3 and 4 (it is all testable material)
• know the key concepts/key terms from Chapters 3 and 4 (please see the Unit 1 Worksheet for these)
• study your answers to the Chapter 3 and 4 questions from the Unit 1 Worksheet (all could potentially be on the test)

I gave back some of your assignments and tests today. I gave you a heads up of how the IB might phrase Paper 3 questions for the Great Depression and the Americas topic, especially material that we're moving into now. We started the "FDR and the New Deal" Google Slides lecture today, so it's probably a good idea to print off a hard copy and bring it to class tomorrow. I've posted these slides on the IB 30/35 wiki. I showed you a video on the assassination of Franz Ferdinand from the BBC series "Days That Shook the World" today, which I hope that you enjoyed. I started a PowerPoint presentation on "The Allied Victory in WWI and the Paris Peace Conference" which I will continue on Monday. No homework this weekend!

I gave both of my classes a reading  booklet with two readings from the Opposing Viewpoints series, one entitled "Globalization Benefits the World's Cultures" and the other "Globalization Hurts the World's Cultures", these two essays should give you some ideas for your essay planning. In my Period 2 class we went through your source that you have to write your Unit 1 WRA II Essay on Monday. I'm going to post this on the Social 10-1 wiki, and I'll share the page with you so it's easy to find. My Period 4 class completed their course selection for Grade 11 courses. You should probably also check out the page that I'm sharing with all of you.

I gave you a handout today called "the recipe for success" which you are allowed to have out next week when you are writing your Unit 1 WRA II Essay. I also gave you the essay question sheet. I'll give you two readings tomorrow which are from the Opposing viewpoints series. One of the readings is entitled "Globalization Harms the World's Cultures" and the other is called "Globalization Benefits the World's Cultures", I'm sure that these readings will help you figure out argumentation and evidence. Your Chapter 6 Key Terms and Questions are due tomorrow.

Today we had a simulated peace conference to try and stop the outbreak of the First World War. The war still broke out! Also, I did a homework check on your Chapter 5 Key Terms and Questions. Tomorrow we'll be watching a video from the BBC series Days That Shook the World on the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.

We did our WWI conference today, unfortunately in both classes war broke out. I'll be showing a BBC video tomorrow on the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. If you're in my Period 4 class, I'll make sure to show you your marks on the Unit 1 Final Exam again because some of you had to rush out to get home.

We started the French Revolution today, and we'll continue with this lecture tomorrow. You will also be writing a current events quiz tomorrow. I'll also address some concerns regarding Friday's Paper 3.

We watched a video from the BBC series "Days That Shook the World" on the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. I then continued lecturing on the Paris Peace Conference and the Treaty of Versailles. Make sure that you read "The Issue of Responsibility" and "Canada's Role in World War I". We'll transition into the Interwar Years over the course of the next few days.

IB 30/35

Most of today's class was spent writing a Social 30-1 WRA I assignment. You had 60 minutes to write it. We will continue with the Cold War tomorrow, by going back to Europe, and more specifically East and West Germany to examine the construction of the Berlin Wall and see how it contributed to Cold War tensions. We are nearing the end of our study of the Cold War. By Wednesday of next week we will be writing the Cold War Exam. A study guide for this exam will be posted on Wednesday of this week. Today's WRA I will not appear on the interim report card that goes home tomorrow. Diploma students: remember that you must submit your TOK Essay by March 12th.

I went through a lecture today that corresponds to material in Chapter 4 and 6 called "The Evolution of Modern Liberalism". I will be sending this PowerPoint presentation to you this afternoon.
