October 23


I wrote notes on the board about the leaders of the Soviet Union, so if you missed class today, you need to get these notes from a classmate. We talked about perestroika, the Four Modernizations, and market socialism today as well. We also started talking about different types of dictatorships. I continued the PowerPoint presentation today called "Ultranationalism in WWII". You can go through the last 8 slides on your own. We watched an excerpt from the movie "Pearl Harbour" to look at the Japanese surprise attack that pulled the USA into the Second World War. 


You wrote the Social 30-1 WRA II position paper today in the Red Lab. Tomorrow, Thursday, October 24th, you're writing the Market and Mixed Economy Test (please see the study guide below). I would recommend looking at "The Evolution of Modern Liberalism" PowerPoint presentation for this test as well. You can find it on the IB 30 History wiki, under the Unit 2 tab.

I'm really sorry that I didn't post this on Friday, it was a really busy Model UN weekend!



We started off with some "E-Cow-nomics" on Friday. I then gave you some notes on leaders of the Soviet Union, so if you missed class today, you need to get these notes from a classmate. You were supposed to read, highlight and annotate the following notes from your Social 30-1 study booklet:

This is a comprehensive exam that covers all of the major economic systems: market economy, mixed economy, and command economy. It is 74 multiple choice questions.

You wrote your Paper 3 on the Civil War and Reconstruction on Friday. On Monday, we'll be moving into a topic for Paper 2 Topic 1: Causes, Practices and Effects of War when we begin our examination of the causes of the First World War. We'll cover WWI in detail, and then follow that up with our Prescribed Subject 1: Peacemaking, Peacekeeping and International Relations 1918-1936.

You wrote your Market and Mixed Economy Test today. I also did a homework check on the Chapter 5 Questions at the beginning of class. You can access your marks in the course through HomeLogic. Here's how you would do this:

  • Go to the HomeLogic main page (https://sirswebapps.cbe.ab.ca/homelogic) 
  • Enter your 9 digit CBE user name where it says "LOG IN NAME"
  • For the "PASSWORD" field, just enter the same password you use to access D2L, Core, Google Apps 
We covered a lot of material today in anticipation of the Economic Systems Exam and the Unit 2 WRA I that you'll be writing tomorrow.

We went through Soviet Leaders Notes, Changes to the Soviet System after Stalin (pages 116-117), Gorbachev to Collapse of the Soviet Union (pages 118-121), Market Socialism (pages 130-133). We also talked about how to write a WRA I (three source analysis, pages 292-293). We also discussed Democratic and Non-Democratic Systems (pages 134-141), Types of Dictatorships (pages 142-143). We got to "The Fatal Attraction of Adolf Hitler" as well. Please remember that your Economic Planning in the USSR (pages 122-129) is due tomorrow.

Please go directly to the Blenheim Room tomorrow morning. We're going to write the Unit 2 WRA I first. You'll have 60 minutes to write it.

I went through a short PowerPoint presentation called "Economic Models Explained by Cows" at the beginning of class. I then had you copy down some jot notes on the board on the leaders of the Soviet Union (from Lenin to Gorbachev). You must go through the following notes in your Social 30-1 study booklet:

  • Changes to the Soviet System After Stalin (pages 116-117)
  • Gorbachev to Collapse (1985-1991) on pages 118-121
  • You were to also read, highlight and answer the questions in the Economic Planning in the USSR (pages 122-129); I'll do a homework check on this work when we come back from Spring Break (probably the Wednesday when we get back)
