March 1 (Social 10)

Today I gave you class time to review in groups for tomorrow's Regionalism final. Please feel free to use the blog's comment section to quiz one another. I could not find the Jeopardy game on my computer at home (sorry). Good luck!

what was the NEP and how did it effect western and eastern relations?
eheheh

Anonymous said...

The NEP is the Nation Energy Program. I have no idea how it effected western and eastern relations.

Anonymous said...

it made west/east relations tense; and the west felt alienated/treated badly compared to the rest of canada.

Anonymous said...

It affected the western and eastern relation because the west thought they were getting the shorter end of the stick because they had to lower the oil prices to the rest of Canada. THe oil prices were around 30$ per barrel and Canada wanted the west to sell the oil at 15$ per barrel.

Anonymous said...

oh, ok, thanks.

Anonymous said...

What are equalization payments and how do they affect Canada's Nationalism?

Anonymous said...

equilization payments is where provinces help eachother out by giving them money. provinces such as Ontario and Alberta have higher tax bases, and thus give most of the money to the federal government to be spread to the other "have not" provinces.

Anonymous said...

happy vikram?
what, who and when was the Quiet Revolution?

Anonymous said...

yes i am happy joe

Jean lesage, 1960-1966

The quebec gov't wanted to give all Quebeckers jobs so that they could have complete control over taxes in the province. Also, they wanted to give more high paying jobs to francophones, rather than anglophones. I believe the third thing was that they wanted complete control of how the french language was used in the province.

Anonymous said...

O about NEP and the oil prices, Trudeau agreed to a 2 $ increase to the $15 but said that 10% of the profits had to go to the federal gov.

Anonymous said...

impressive

Anonymous said...

What were the four parties that formed to prevent western alienation, and who were their leaders?

Anonymous said...

What was the BNA act

Anonymous said...

BNA act is just another name for confederation (1867)

Anonymous said...

The BNA act was Canada's first constitution. It remained that way until 1982, when Trudeau got Canada it's own constitution, and its Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Britain had no control over the changes to the constitution anymore.

Anonymous said...

well there is 5 but to name 4 would be:
1) United Farmers of Alberta 1909
Henry Wisewood, Irene Parlby
improve social and economic status of farmers
2) Progressive Party 1920
Violet McNaughton
reduce protective tariffs
3) Social Credit (1930s mid)
William Aberthard
give credit, national divident
4) Reform Party 1987
Preston Manning
reduce government spendings

Anonymous said...

I believe its spelled Aberhart

Anonymous said...

what, when, who was did the PQ involve? and what when who did the Bloc Quebecois involve?

Anonymous said...

the four parties were the:
1.united farmers of alberta 1909 and their leaders were henry wise wood and irene parlby.
2.Progessive party 1920 and the leader was Niolet McNaughton
3.Co-opertive commonwealth federation 1932 and the leader was T.C Douglas
4.Social credit 1930s leader was William Aberhart.
5.Reform party of Canada 1987 leader was Preston Manning.

Now....what were their policies or goals huuuuuh?

Anonymous said...

lol aberhart,calm down peoples ahha

Anonymous said...

Parti Quebecois was started by Rene Levesque...i believe in 1976. They were elected as the leading party in quebec in 1980, and held a referendum regarding Quebec's separation from Canada in 1982. The PQ was later lead by Jaques Parizeau (1993), Lucien Bouchard, and Bernard Landry(2003)

anyone else wanna do BQ?

Anonymous said...

i already did it

Anonymous said...

really? where

Anonymous said...

look up

Anonymous said...

What were the points of view for the francophones anglophones during Mulroney's attempts to get Quebec to sign the constitution (Meech Lake and Charlottetown accords)

Anonymous said...

like already did the policies not BQ

anyways BQ was lead by Lucien Bouchard in 1993 and it's federal PQ is provincial

Anonymous said...

ahh okay gotcha! hahaha

Anonymous said...

quebecers wanted a distinct society, and more priviledges while the british/english thought that quebec shouldn't deserve such power, and were both rejected by canada.

Anonymous said...

very good :D

Anonymous said...

during the manitoba schools question who was the prime minister and the premier of manitoba?

Anonymous said...

Anyone know which prime minister introduced GST?

Anonymous said...

The prime minister for the manitoba schools question was Wilfred Laurier, and the premier of Manitoba at that time was Thomas Greenway

Anonymous said...

why would you need to know GST?
i dont' know could be any of the prime ministers since all they want is revenue and money for personal gain :D

Anonymous said...

PM: Laurier, Premier: Greenway

Anonymous said...

for the GST question, i recommend a google :D

Anonymous said...

Why were the FLQ carrying out terrorist activities, and name key activities that they carried out. :D

Anonymous said...

That's true (about the GST), most parties going for the federal election since have proposed some kind of cut to the GST or complete elimination, but somehow when they get elected it never gets done.

Anonymous said...

Stephen Harper promised one. I seriously doubt that he will fulfill that promise, if any.

Anonymous said...

they wanted to sway the government to let quebec seperate with violence. kidnapped british trade commisioner James Cross, and quebec labour minister Peirre LaPorte, Laporte was later found dead, and also there were bombings

Anonymous said...

The FLQ's ultimate goal was to force the government to allow Quebec's separation. They planted bombs, and in 1970 they kidnapped trade commisioner James Cross, and Quebec labour minister Pierre Laporte. (at least i think it is 1970)

Anonymous said...

how fun, people answerin the same question, sigh

Anonymous said...

the flq wanted quebec to separate and they kidnnaped james cross and pierre laporte (which they killed)

Anonymous said...

what was the Act of Union?

Anonymous said...

lol totally

Anonymous said...

The money from GST is way too lucrative for the government to get rid of it, so even though the PM who created it got thrown out in the election after, those politicians probably worship his name in secret.

Anonymous said...

Act of union (1841) : Durhams's suggestion to unite colonies and grant responsible government

Anonymous said...

HAHA i am sure they do worship.

The act of union was proposed by Lord Durham, and made an official act in 1841. It joined upper and lower Canada as one.

Anonymous said...

THe FLQ came around in 1969, but their terrorist attacks began to be noticed in 1970 (August, I think)

Anonymous said...

The act of union in 1841 was suggested by Lord Durham after his study to why the colonies were in unrest. It joined the two colonies (upper and lower canada) into one. Lord Durham believed this would help assimilate French culture into the English majority.

Anonymous said...

is GST gonna be on the test?

Anonymous said...

did he even mention the GST prime minister stuff in class?

Anonymous said...

The act of union also gave the colonies responsible government (more independence). And by the way, who is pumping all those questions out (Vikrum...!)?

Anonymous said...

NO hahaha...random discussion...sorry

Anonymous said...

no, GST isn't on the test, just a discussion point.

Anonymous said...

KJ way to spell my name wrong, and no, its not me btw

Anonymous said...

What are the names of ALL the lakes in Ontario (and all 5 of the great lakes)

Anonymous said...

But, since we are in the questioning spirit, i might as well ask one.

HAHA easy one. Name all the provincial capitals and the provinces that they are the capitals of. :D

Anonymous said...

To the lake question:

Lake Nipigon
Lake of the Woods
Lake St. Clair

Lake superior
Lake huron
Lake erie
Lake ontario
Lake michigan

I may have forgotten some of the ontario ones

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said...

Obscure geography questions:
What is the name of the large island in the Gulf of St. Lawrence (NOT PEI).
What is the name of the bridge that spans between PEI and Nova Scotia?

Anonymous said...

Lakes: i guess u could also include Georgian bay...but yeah

Anonymous said...

1960- 1970 was when the FLQ was active

Anonymous said...

WHOA! who swore on the blog
hahahhahaha

Anonymous said...

History question:
What major event in history did the Quebec Act help begin (hint: the local English were NOT happy with the allowance of more independence to the French, and also because they were not allowed to expand westward).

Anonymous said...

i will not even attempt those obscurities

Anonymous said...

GEORGEAN BAY! That's a bay not a lake, it is part of Lake Huron.

Anonymous said...

hahahhahahahahahha
okay focus people
lol yes sorry for my vulger language

Anonymous said...

Answers to geography:
Anticosti Island.
Confederation Bridge.

Anonymous said...

What was the compromise PM Laurier reached in the MB schoos ?, and what were its terms.

Anonymous said...

ooo good question

Anonymous said...

yeah, well, answer it!

Anonymous said...

catholic schools could take place and so could french teacings?

Anonymous said...

haha this is a guess but, lauriers "sunny ways" compromise said that if numbers warranted it both catholic church and french instruction could continue

Anonymous said...

i think thats right :D

Anonymous said...

YES!
Now, what is meant by "sovereign association", and which party coined it?

Anonymous said...

what are the causes or regional disparity? (yes long question i kno)

Anonymous said...

Answer to history:
The Quebec Act was passed to make the French people under British rule happy, but it made the English people there unhappy, namely, the Americans. This was one straw piled on a whole bunch of others, including various taxes, and eventually it was simply too much for the Americans. They rebelled: American revolution (1775-1783).

Anonymous said...

sovereign association: suggested that quebec become a independant country and that the laws of canada would nolonger apply to quebec. the party quebecios started it which were led by levesque

Anonymous said...

i have a question. who is asking those history/geography questions. and what is your msn haha

Anonymous said...

This question is exclusively for KJ because she feels left out.

Name the key points of the Riel Rebellions

Anonymous said...

sweet melissa. i am adding you up asap

Anonymous said...

regional dispariy causes:
phy. features
natural resources
labour force
urbanization
technology
transportation
location

Anonymous said...

Regional disparity causes:
Physical characteristics - flat land is waaay easier to build buildings on.
Natural resources - if you're swimming in oil, you're swimming in cash.
Location - being in the middle of the Sahara doesn't get you much trade.
Urbanization - notice all the major industrialized countries have CITIES?
Transportation - you've gotta get stuff around.
Technology - a stone age civilization isn't much of an economic power.
Labour force - who works in the factories? Not robots, not yet.

Anonymous said...

haha
the canadian government took over the hudsons bay co. and the land around it, and they didn't negotiate with the Metis.

Anonymous said...

i am asking those geography questions and history questions, but sorry I don't have an MSN (gasp!).

Anonymous said...

KJ i believe there is more than that

Anonymous said...

i believe so to

Anonymous said...

Devin, is that you?

Anonymous said...

Rhetorical: If the PQ return to power and they hold another referendum, what do you think the votes would be?

Anonymous said...

what are the root causes of western alienation

Anonymous said...

the governmnt bought the land from the Hudson's Bay Company and the Métis wanted to make sure the rights of Westerners were assured. They took the measuring chains and other stuff to get the attention of the government

Anonymous said...

western alienation is viewed by westerners (duh)
They think that politicians think that the west is a large vast land to be exploited

Anonymous said...

Who? Who is this Devin you speak of? And by the way, I've been answering my own questions, since none of you guys seem to bother (spoilsports).
Western Alienation started because the Hudson's Bay Co. owned the lands of the west, but didn't care much about the native inhabitants' well being (companies caring only for profit, surprise surprise). It only got worse after the Canadian government bought the land - but didn't consult the people living there (just imagine someone buying your house without telling you).

Anonymous said...

sweet. good job chris

Anonymous said...

hahah nice analogy devin

Anonymous said...

melissa, what's the order of PG leaders from Jean Lesage?

Anonymous said...

I knew it was you devin. I have been answering for a while lol

Anonymous said...

PG?

Anonymous said...

NO one's going to answer my rhetorical?! Oh well, I'd guess that if they held another referendum it would be really close, but probably a stay in Canada. (unless the current feds mess things up REAL bad). A lot of Quebecers seem not to keen about the issue.

Anonymous said...

PQ sry

Anonymous said...

ok, vikram
here is the answer haha
the metis made a list of rights, and the prime minister passed a bill that made the province of Manitoba. Then the govt threatened their land rights, and were ignoring the metis, so they resorted to violence.
Reil then got tried for treason and was hung, and SJAM could have saved him but was under to much pressure from Ontario, so he took their side

Anonymous said...

It was a rhetorical question.

I think that means we aren't supposed to answer.

I think what you were thinking of was hypothetical?

Anonymous said...

uh pg? lol ok pg....levesque, parizeau and then bochard...right?

Anonymous said...

haha good job KJ

Anonymous said...

anyone gonna answer my question?

Anonymous said...

levesque, parizeau, bouchard, and then landry :D

Anonymous said...

k never mind
didn't refresh it lol

Anonymous said...

levesque was the one with staph right?

Anonymous said...

You have to wonder where the happy medium is... In almost all political confrontations between Quebec and the feds, Anglophones think the Francophones have WAY too much power, but the Francophones think they don't have enough! Anyone else see the dilema?
Anyway, what were the terms offered in the Meech Lake Accord and the Charlottetown Accord? Also, who didn't sign on to the constitution repatriation and why?

Anonymous said...

the flesh eating disease

Anonymous said...

why thank you
it was hard work

Anonymous said...

nope that was bouchard with the cane...
flesh eating disease

Anonymous said...

Bouchard was the one who battled flesh eating disease (his leg was amputated, shown with a cane in political cartoons).

Anonymous said...

o ok thx
I have no idea why Quebec didn't sign the Constitution repatriation but they didn't

Anonymous said...

I will answer that will quebec join/leave question. I think that it'll be a lot like the 1980 referendum but a lot closer this time. I don't think there r enough people in quebec willing to seperate.

Anonymous said...

Meech Lake and Charlottetown just gave the french more power and they would be able to do their own religion and stuff

Anonymous said...

they wanted changes first

Anonymous said...

WOW... over 100 comments in an hour... we must be geeks...
And to answer my own question, Quebec wanted s w e e p i n g constititutional changes before it would sign on.

Anonymous said...

that's why quebc didn't sign the constitution right?

Anonymous said...

hehe guess who started the chain reaction...thats right...your friendly neighbourhood joe and vikram

Anonymous said...

yeppers chris

Anonymous said...

The specifics of the Meech Lake Accord was to give Quebec special status as a "protector of French society in Canada". The Charlottetown Accord was "sweeping constitutional changes" and a "distinct society clause" for Quebec. Man, it was such a huge offer... Quebec should learn from labour unions and accept the deal while the government is generous (or desperate).

Anonymous said...

oo i have a question.

What was the purpose of the Constitutional act?

(besides making upper and lower canada)

(if there is any)

Anonymous said...

lol Quebec should learn from the NHL and accept the first offer so they can actually get the best deal

Anonymous said...

ok...who was the most unpopular Prime minister? and which 2 major events did he hold?

Anonymous said...

to give upper and lower canada separate democratic assemblys and ideas

Anonymous said...

was it mulroney because of the meech lake accord and the charlottetown accord

Anonymous said...

HAHA the most unpopular prime minister?

kind of speculation with that one.

But anyways, i think it was Mulroney and the Meech Lake and Charlottetown accords?

am i correct melissa?

Anonymous said...

The idea in the Constitutional Act was to separate the French and the English of Canada so they wouldn't get into trouble with each other. You see, just because the loyalists were loyal to Britain didn't mean they would be happy living with British subjects who really were French people conquered into the British empire. The division of Canada into 2 colonies allowed each group to live in peace (just like North and South Korea... hence the Act of Union a while later).

Anonymous said...

Thank you devin :)

Anonymous said...

yes yes u are ahhah

Anonymous said...

do we have to know the stuff about the plains of abraham battle like Wolfe and Montcalm? in 1763

Anonymous said...

Quebec learn from the NHL? The NHL was locked out for a year... so that means Quebec would separate from Canada for a year?!?! Imagine the confusion, the horror, the swooning politicians.
And what is a first minister conference?

Anonymous said...

a first minister conference is where the prime minister meets with all the premiers

Anonymous said...

is it me or is there like 2 comments coming in every minute

Anonymous said...

no, the nhl took a worse deal than the first one offered. so quebec should just leave. they distub national unity and they disturb me! lol

Anonymous said...

You probably don't have to know about the battles, but you do have to know the war: Which war did which treaty end that the plains of abraham was part of?

Anonymous said...

omg chris OF COURSE NOT thts grade 8 stuff. but yeah i really liked those 2 guys. they were soooo...battle crazed

Anonymous said...

Treaty of paris, and seven years war :D

Anonymous said...

the treaty of paris ended the seven years war between britain and france

Anonymous said...

there are like 2 comments coming in every minute, and it is you, because you're helping add to it.
Exactly what kind of sovereign deal did the PQ suggest, especially in the second referendum?

Anonymous said...

battle crazed was wrong. they were just very good commanders who were good at what they did

Anonymous said...

we are so pro chris

Anonymous said...

And by the way, "those 2 guys" both died on the battlefield.

Anonymous said...

we disscussed this in class, but its a good question...whats the diff between a federal election and a referndum? ahaha kinda easy

Anonymous said...

no, wolfe died after the battle i think and montcalm died during the battle

Anonymous said...

well, not exactly on the battlefield, I think Montcalm was carried into the city and died there.

Anonymous said...

we are so off topic...someone answer the PQ question please :)

Anonymous said...

fderal election is voting a new government and referendum is approving a new law

Anonymous said...

yes devin..i kno...THATS WHY THEY'RE BATTLE CRAZED hahah and thats why they're so cool

Anonymous said...

what is the pq question?

Anonymous said...

Where's Mr.Gilchrist?

Anonymous said...

MELISSA! PQ REFERENDUM QUESTION PLEASE? do you know it? because i don't :(

Anonymous said...

i think Mr. Gilchrist has class and volleyball today.

Anonymous said...

the PQ question was posted at 10:20

Anonymous said...

no, that just means that they had the bad luck to stand where a musket ball happened to pass by, and their death is no more heroic than any other soldier who died on the battlefield.
And answer my PQ question already!

Anonymous said...

THANK YOU DEVIN!

Anonymous said...

pq regerendum? uhhh the important 1980 one? lol its the one where pq asks quebecers to vote for whether they want to stay in canada or not GEEZE hahaha

Anonymous said...

well, that means that they were good generals and lead from the front, not from behind

Anonymous said...

NOOOO MELISSA! 10:20 referendum question

Anonymous said...

ahhah devin ur so funny..
i guess ur right..BUT THEY ARE STILL COOL ahah

Anonymous said...

"Penses-tu que le province de Québec va devenir une pays souverign qui a ses lois de lui même" and some other stuff

Anonymous said...

for the 10:20 question

Anonymous said...

haha okay thank you chris...its a good thing i know SOME french

Anonymous said...

i think

Anonymous said...

sarcasm?

Anonymous said...

HAHAHA!!! SMART GENERALS LEAD FROM THE BACK, SO THEY DON'T GET KILLED. Think about it, if you're a general you have a lot of responsibility, and if you get killed who's going to lead your army? It takes a lot more years to train a good general than a common soldier, and besides, one single man fighting will make a lot less difference than one general leading his troops effectively. While that doesn't mean good generals always lead from the back, or that generals who lead from the back are good, it certainly helps.

Anonymous said...

Well, Vikram is going to read some ppts hahahaha...good luck on the test tomorrow boys and girls, although i think its just chris, devin melissa and i here :)

Anonymous said...

ohhhh hahahah sorry i dont kno....
i think it was in the video we watched

Anonymous said...

good luck to you too vikram and cya in math lol

Anonymous said...

and smart generals would do tours of the front lines to raise morale of troops too

Anonymous said...

omg....i guess u really dont like those guys do u devin? ahahha anyways...
chris do u kno the answer to the 10:20 question?

Anonymous said...

The PQ's idea was essentially that Quebec would separate culturally and socially, but remain in the economy of Canada. This would include using Canadian currency and trading with Canada. Anglophone critics picked on this, their main argument "then what difference would this sovereignty make?"

Anonymous said...

For Western alienation, what does the NEP say or do to alienate westerners?

Anonymous said...

Penses-tu que le province de Québec dois devenir une pays souverign qui a ses lois de lui même" and some other stuff
for the 10:20 question
Translation: Do you think the province should become a soverign country and have its own constitution...

Anonymous said...

So what do you have to know about regional disparity???????????????????

Anonymous said...

chris...scroll to top.
devin...is that the answer to the question?

Anonymous said...

for those of you who don't understand french geeze

Anonymous said...

Yes, generals tour their lines to boost morale, but the important thing is not to allow unnessary risk to come to officers. Example: In WWI at first many volunteers to the armies were educated young men pressured by peers and girlfriends to join the "glorious" war. The result? At the end of the war the armies were low on officers, since these officers would be trained from the educated people. The importance of officers can't be underestimated: they provide leadership and have more experience. The average drafted soldier is simply a walking, eating, fighting machine that if given the choice would rather relax in camp than go fight in the trenches.

Anonymous said...

why scroll to top????!!

Anonymous said...

What you need to know can be found on the blog on Feb. 24.

Anonymous said...

regional disparity is the inequality or difference in standard of living, wages, and econmic factors. there are also indicators of disparity but that takes too long to type and by the time im done, someone might have already answered it ahahha

devin: u must not like war at all...
anonymous: ...

Anonymous said...

regional disparity is when one province or region has more resources/cash/etc. than another They make it up through equalization payments. right now, alberta and ontario are the only provinces who pay them. There are several indicators. wages...education...unemployment rate...cost of living...standard of living

Anonymous said...

Yay thanks cris whoever you are=)))

Anonymous said...

anonymous, who r u?

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said...

Okay, it's time for me to go. But first, food for thought: If the French had won the Seven Years War and took over the British colonies, do you think we would be having the same problems - with Ontario separatists? It seems to me people are always imposing their government and culture on others - and people are never happy with their current situation either.
