Today's class was spent preparing for tomorrow's Social 30-1 WRA II-style position paper. You're allowed to bring in the essay question sheet tomorrow with your notes posted below the line, and only on the FRONT side of the sheet.

You did the summative activity for the Authoritarian States unit. Each group was given previous IB exam questions and you had to prep for them using either Hitler, Stalin, Peron, Castro, Nasser, or Mao.

 Please make sure that you share your Google Docs/Slides with me as well (please give me editing powers so I can post on them on the wiki). Please share with my GMail account. Don't forget to make a copy of your finished product tomorrow (brochure, mini-booklet, etc.). Next Monday (December 17th) you will be writing a multiple choice test on the Authoritarian States unit. Please check out the study guide below to prepare for this test. 


This test has 65 multiple choice questions on it. The emphasis of the test is on Nazi Germany and Stalin's USSR. You should review the following materials and concepts: 

  • Non-Democratic Systems (handout notes)
  • Totalitarianism (handout notes)
  • Types of Political Systems (Google Slides presentation, it's on the wiki in the Democracies section)
  • techniques of DICTatorship (direction of popular discontent, indoctrination and propaganda, controlled participation, terror and force)

We started in the Blue Lab today getting ready for the presentations on Wednesday and Thursday. Tomorrow, you'll be moved into your "dictator conference groups" where there will be one member of each of the "dictator group". The Mao group will present first tomorrow to the other three group members, followed by the Castro group. I showed you a video on the connection between cheap oil prices and globalization today. I also showed you a video from CBC News in Review on e-waste in China. We also started doing an activity on the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which we will start with tomorrow. 


I gave you time to work on your Chapter 9 Key Terms and Questions, which are due tomorrow. Your Chapter 11 Key Terms and Questions will be due next Wednesday (December 19th)

We continued looking at the concept of illiberalism today. I needed to give you some historical context for the anti-terrorism legislation that was passed in Canada and the United States post-9/11, so I showed you some videos from the CBC News in Review series on the anniversaries of 9/11. We then proceeded to talk about the USA PATRIOT Act, and how it has been extended/renewed multiple times. You're writing the Chapter 10 Test on Friday, December 14th.
