November 8

We finished off the "China Rises: Getting Rich" video, so you should have finished the film study sheet to go along with this video. This Friday (November 10th) you will be doing a debate on the following topic: "Be it resolved that the 21st century will belong to China" I broke you into two teams today for this debate. This was a debate topic from the Munk Debate series. You can find the link to the Munk Debate on China here. At the Munk Debate site you can watch video highlights of the debate, and read the transcript from the debate. Another interesting link is to check out Hans Rosling's 200 Countries, 200 Years in 4 Minutes. This is interesting to note the development of China and how there is a disparity between different regions in China. And now for a couple of links to videos and stories from Fareed Zakaria's Global Public Square: challenges facing China's leadershipwhy China's leadership needs a PR overhaul.  To get a closer look at any of the infographics belowright click on the image and open in a new window

We looked at the international response to Japan's invasion of Manchuria in 1931, especially from the League of Nations. As you will see, the League of Nations was unable to deal with powerful nation-states that were determined to pursue an expansionist foreign policy. I finished off the lecture on the Japanese invasion of Manchuria today.

November 7

We continued on with Prescribed Subject 3 today, by looking at the invasion of Manchuria. I started a lecture today on "Japanese Expansion in Southeast Asia (1931-1941)". We'll continue this lecture tomorrow. We'll look at the international response to Japan's annexation of Manchuria tomorrow. You should read pages xx-xx in The Move to Global War.

I showed you a video at the beginning of the class, called "Global Economic Issues". You should have taken notes on this video. I also started a video called "China Rises: Getting Rich" and there was a film study sheet to go along with this video that you should have completed.
