You worked on pair partner tests on Unit 3 material today. When we get back from the Winter Break we'll tie up some loose ends with Unit 4 material, do some more pair partner tests and you'll be writing Part A of your Final Exam on Wednesday, January 8th.


We played some review Kahoot games today, which took the whole period. Enjoy your Winter Break!


We had a little party today, and watched a fair bit of "Saving Private Ryan". This movie is on Netflix, and I would recommend you finish watching it, because it is an amazing movie!

We continued with the Causes and Effects of 20th Century Wars (World History Topic 11) today in class, by moving on to the "Course of the Second World War in Europe and North Africa". We'll continue on with this theme for the next couple of days before we move on to the Asia-Pacific theatre of war next week. We're going to be looking at the Second World War until the Christmas break. I went through the Rights Notes in your Social 30-1 course books, we also started talking about the usage of the War Measures Act (only to be used in times of war, invasion, and insurrection), the case study of the internment of Japanese-Canadians in WWII. You should this PowerPoint off and highlight key parts of the lecture. Tomorrow, we'll be looking at the FLQ Crisis in greater detail, and the concept of illiberalism as well. You're writing the Unit 3 WRA II position paper on Monday, December 9th (you'll get the essay question sheet in advance).

I went through a lecture on German foreign policy from 1933-1937. You can find a digital copy and the Google Slides for this lecture on the IB 30/35 wiki. I would like you to read pages 141-155 in your The Move to Global War textbook. It also occurs to me that we've been talking about a lot of international agreements lately, so I think you should put together a note-taking chart like the one below.




I gave you some class time to read over the "Modern History of China" section in your course books, and then I showed you a couple of videos from the BBC 20th Century History series, namely, "One Man's Revolution" and "China Since Mao". Your USA-Canada Comparative Government Assignment is due tomorrow. Your Civil Rights Movement Assignment is due on Friday, and your Chapter 11 Key Terms and Questions are due on Wednesday. One week from today (Monday, December 9th), you will be writing your Unit 3 WRA II position paper. You will get the essay question sheet ahead of time once again.


You wrote your Unit 2 WRA II position paper in class today. Hopefully, I will be able to mark them quickly! You will get the Unit 2 WRA I that you wrote last Monday back tomorrow. We watched a couple of videos today, one on the electoral college and the other on gerrymandering. I also skimmed through the lecture on "Political Challenges to Liberalism". Tomorrow, we'll be watching a documentary on Vladimir Putin (case study fro oligarchy). Just a friendly reminder: the comparative government assignment is due next Tuesday (December 3rd)



I showed you a video today called "The Road to War-Italy" today at the start of class. You must read pages 130-135 in your textbook The Move to Global War tonight. I also want you to get a little Paper 1 practice in, so I'd like you to do the Paper 1 Practice for Question 11 for Case Study 2 on page 139 in the textbook. Pick either question 2 (regarding the importance of economics for Italy's foreign policy under Mussolini) which uses Source I (page 114) and Source K (page 116) OR, you can do question 3 (concerning the international response to Italy's invasion of Abyssinia) which uses Source U (page 124) and Source X (page 126).

We continued studying Unit 3 material today. We covered different types of electoral systems (FPTP and PR). We re-cast the 2019 Canadian federal election with PR. We also looked at the structure of the American government and their system of checks and balances. We watched a video on the electoral college system (see below), and we talked about the comparative government assignment which is due next Tuesday (December 3rd).

We looked at the concept of national self-determination today (I didn't specifically refer to it as such, but that was the concept that was covered today). You did a reading on Kosovo, and we watched a CBC News in Review on Kosovo declaring independence. We also looked at another case of a region of Spain (Catalonia) that has had a referendum on independence from Spain, and the results of that referendum vote.

I went through the lecture on the Italian invasion of Abyssinia today. I broke you into small discussion groups to go over your  homework assignment from last night where you completed a ranking (and rationale) of the international responses to the Abyssinian crisis, from most severe response to least severe response. Tomorrow we should be able to start wrapping up Italy, and begin moving on Germany.

We watched the A & E Biography of Benito Mussolini today. We also finished off the lecture that I started yesterday on Italian foreign policy. For homework tonight, please read pages 119-129 in The Move to Global War textbook, and complete a ranking (and rationale) of the international responses to the Abyssinian crisis, from most severe response to least severe response. It would probably be best to do this in a chart.
