July 1

Happy Canada Day!


We did a lot of beginning of the semester/administrative tasks at the beginning of the class. I have sent you an e-mail, so please check your e-mail inboxes today when you get home. If you have a Hotmail account, you may have to check your junk mail folder and add me as someone that you want to get e-mail messages from. We went through different perspectives of globalization today, by looking at how various people and organizations define globalization. As you can see, there are many different perspectives on globalization. Some people feel that globalization is beneficial and others feel that globalization creates problems. Over the course of the semester, we will be looking what your perspective on globalization is, in other words, do you feel that it has more benefits or drawbacks? We also looked at various images, political cartoons and photographs that illustrated aspects of globalization as well. You have a couple of homework assignments tonight:




  • You must find 20 items in your house (from categories such as electronics, clothing, household goods, food, cars, or miscellaneous) from 20 different countries
  • Put these 20 different items into a chart format (as I wrote it on the blackboard)
  • Please do not have more than 5 items from any one category
  • Also, you must complete your Chapter 1 Key Terms and Questions for tomorrow
  • Make sure that you read Chapter 1!!

The format for this exam is pretty straightforward, you will be given a blank map, labeled with numbers. You must be able to identify the countries that are labeled on the map. You will be given an answer sheet, and a list of countries that appear on the map. You need to be able to identify the countries. Here are the countries that you need to know the location of:

  • NAFTA members (Canada, USA, Mexico)
  • G8 countries (Canada, USA, Great Britain, France, Italy, Germany, Japan, Russia)
  • some EU countries (there are 27 countries in the EU, here's a hyperlink to the map of the EU)
  • full members of MERCOSUR: Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and other associate members or countries that are achieving membership in MERCOSUR, such as: Venezuela, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador
  • African countries: Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Libya, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan
  • other very important countries that will be in the news this year, or that we'll be talking about, or get mentioned in your textbook: Cuba, Jamaica, China, India, Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq

This quiz will be on Monday, July 5th. The format of this quiz is matching. There will be 16 key terms on this quiz. Please make sure that you know what the following key terms mean:
