February 16

I finished off the lecture on "The Development of Classical Liberalism" today. I have sent this PowerPoint presentation to you already, so please print it off and add it to your notes. Whenever you print off these presentations, please print them off 4-6 slides per page. After I completed this lecture I gave you time to work on your Chapter 3 Questions in class. These questions are due on Tuesday February 22nd. Please make sure that you read Chapter 4 before next class. Have a great long weekend!

I talked a little bit about the class wiki today, so please remember to check your e-mail (inbox and junk mail) for the invitation to the wiki. I gave you class time to work on Chapter 4 Key Terms and Questions today, these are due on Tuesday February 22nd. Please remember your Chapter 1-2 Test is on February 23rd, please see study guide here. Your Illustrated Concept Map Assignment is due on Thursday February 24th, this is your last weekend to work on this project, so try to get the concept web completed.

I've had a few questions about how to reference images fromt he Internet, so I'm just posting a little step-by-step example here to give an idea how to do it.

Most of you will probably use Google for your image search. Just type in your image search term.

A bunch of different images will pop up. Just click on one that you like. Go to the website where the image is hosted.

Right click on the image and then click on "Properties" and then you'll get the address of the image.

The pop up dialogue box will look something like this.

This is where it's nice to have either Microsoft Word 2007 or 2010 because it has a built-in reference tab that makes it easy to cite your sources. Click on the References tab, make sure it is set to APA. If you click on Insert Citation or Bibliography, you'll get a pop up that will look something like this. I've put in the information for the image that I used in this example.

For our concept Maps do we have to define everything we place on there, or if we are putting examples of something (say collective identity; religion, view of history, language, beliefs, culture etc) do we have to define all of those too?

Just define the key concepts that in the box on the assignment sheet. I hope that clears things up.

What style of referencing are we using again? If I remember correctly we are supposed to use APA style...

For the linking words/sentences, it basically is using linking words in a sentence that connects different aspects of globalization, correct?

social 10-1 RN: For our written description, do we write justifications for our links or is that for our linking sentences. In essence, what do we write for our written?!

Yes, use the most recent edition of APA. Check your agenda for APA format, and if you have a 2007 or 2010 verison of Word you can build your reference list fairly easily. Just be careful, APA has some quirks around capitalization.

Make sure that the sentences that connect key concepts on your illustrated concept map make sense and that they all of the concepts together that have connections.

The big theme for Unit 1 is the impact of globalization on identity. Have an introductory paragraph that centers around the increasing interconnections and interdependencies that we are experiencing as a result of globalization. What impact does social globalization have on individual and collective identity? (2nd paragraph) What impact does economic globalization have on individual and collective identity? (3rd paragraph)What impact does political globalization have on individual and collective identity? (4th paragraph) Don't forget to include subconcepts of these different types of globalization and their impacts on the different types of identity. Don't forget to have a concluding paragraph. You're looking a 5 x 5 structure on this written description. Please do not describe the steps involved in making your illustrated concept map either!

For the concept map, do we need more than one picture per concept?

------------------------------------
For each of the key concepts inside the box on the assignment sheet try to have one picture to illustrate that concept. Some will have more examples and pictures to illustrate them. For example, for social globalization students typically include pictures of social networking site logos, picutres of internet browsers like the Firefox logo and Internet Explorer logos, and things like that.

Can our subconcepts and examples be outside our main concept's "block"?

Hi Mr.G, I'm wondering if there needs to be examples for economic, political, and social globalization. These concepts are rather broad, and I already branch them out into a ton of other subconcepts, so is there any reason to provide an example of it? If so, how would we do that without infringing on the subconcepts of it?

Yes.

Typically students do find some visual examples to illustrate those concepts. For social globalization people pick out pictures of cell phones, satellites, Facebook logos, Firefox logos, Internet Explorer logos, etc. For economic globalization students use images associated with international trade, stock market, and money. For political globalization they use images associated with the UN, maybe pictures from recent pro-democracy protests would work too. See, that wasn't so hard.

The agenda doesn't have the "online picture" reference, but it has the "a document on the internet" reference, so should I use that or should I use a format from my junior high agenda?

ex: Falcons in flight. [Online Picture]. Retrieved January 29, 2006 from the Internet: http://birds.com

Also, on microsoft word, there isn't a specific format for online pictures, only electronic source, miscellaneous or a website.

Thanks!!!

I'm trying to cook up a visual tutorial on how to do it, but the blog isn't letting me upload images for some reason. Just use the "document on the Internet/website" format. If you used Google images for the image search, please don't use Google as the address, you have to get the image's address where it is hosted on the Internet.Go to the website where the image is located, right click on it and then click on "Properties", and that will get you the correct address.

Ok, so the images that we choose can be considered examples as well? For example, if I have a picture of facebook on top of communication technologies, it would count both as a visual/graphic and as an example/subconcept?
