Sorry folks, I had a busy Friday and Saturday and neglected to post this on time.


You wrote your Paper 3 today in class. We'll be going through Social 30-1 position paper writing next week. On Wednesday, you'll be writing a 30-1 WRA II essay on Wednesday, October 23rd. You'll be writing a 30-1 multiple choice test on economic systems on Thursday, October 24th (please see the study guide below).

We talked briefly about the different strands of socialism as well. We watched a video from the BBC 20th Century History series on "Stalin and the Modernization of the USSR" as well.

I showed you the A & E Biography of Stalin today, and while you watched the video, you were supposed to answer the film study questions.  Please make sure that you read in your course books the readings on Marx, Lenin, and Stalin (pages 107-114). You should read, highlight, and annotate these readings. I did a homework check on your Chapter 5 Key Terms today

I started a PowerPoint lecture today about the rise of ultranationalism in Italy, Japan, and Germany. I'll continue this lecture when you get back from Spring Break. I gave you class time to work on your Chapter 6 Key Terms and Questions. This homework assignment won't be due until first week back from Spring Break, so don't bother working on it at home. Take time off from school during the break.

I taught you another mnemonic device today, this time to show you that the League of Nations was a FAILURe. You should be able to remember this mnemonic and be applied to two key case studies in the Interwar Years: the Japanese invasion of Manchuria, and the Italian invasion of Abyssinia. I also showed you a video from the BBC 20th Century History series called "Why Appeasement?" While you watched this video you should have answered the film study questions from your Social 20-1 course books. You also should have the section in your course books called "Was Appeasement a Good Idea?" and complete the focus task in this section. Tomorrow, we'll start talking about the rise of ultranationalism in Italy, Japan, and Germany.


I went through the Russian History Notes from your Social 30-1 course books. You must read in your course books the readings on Marx, Lenin, and Stalin (pages 107-114). You should read, highlight, and annotate these readings. I showed you a video from the BBC 20th Century History series called "Stalin and the Modernization of Russia", and while you watched this video, you should have taken point form notes on it. I gave you some time to work on your Chapter 5 Key Terms, which are due tomorrow (just the key terms). We continued looking at the command economy in the USSR today. I gave you notes on leaders of the Soviet Union that you had to copy down off the board. I gave you the following readings today:

  • "Economic Planning in the USSR"
I also showed a short documentary called "Marx to McDonald's" which covered the economic changes that the Soviet Union experienced with perestroika.

We looked at the USA PATRIOT Act again today, and looked at the sweeping powers it gave to the U.S. government. I showed you part of the documentary "Unconstitutional" today, and while you were watching this documentary, you should have been answering the film study questions that went along with it. We also talked the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee Report on Torture. I also took in your U.S. Civil Rights Movement Assignment. Please check out the important dates below.

We finished off the documentary called "9/11: The Day that Changed the World", and we started talking about the USA PATRIOT Act. We'll watch "Unconstitutional" tomorrow. Please remember the following key dates:

  • Chapter 11 Key Terms and Questions are due on Friday, December 11th
  • Unit 3 WRA I is on Tuesday, December 15th

We covered a lot of territory today looking at Karl Marx, Lenin and Stalin, while also reviewing some basics related to the economic spectrum. We also started talking about the Soviet economic system. If you are an IB Diploma student, your EE rough draft is due tomorrow.

Most of today's class was probably filled with watching the A & E Biography of Hitler called "The Fatal Attraction of Adolf Hitler". While you watched this documentary you should have been taking notes on the video. Hopefully, I'll be in class tomorrow...

I'm sorry that I wasn't able to post on the blog on Friday, I really had to get out of the city to get to my family reunion. Today was a really bad to miss because we covered so much content. I gave you some time to read, highlight, and annotate the Karl Marx Notes(p. 94-96 in the Social 30-1 blue study booklets), the Lenin Notes (p. 97-98), the Joseph Stalin Notes (p. 99-101), and the Russian History Notes (p. 104). We watched the A & E Biography "Joseph Stalin: Red Terror". While you watched this video, you were supposed to complete the film study on page 115 of your study booklet.

We also went through the Command Economy (p. 105-106), the Structure of the Soviet Economy (p. 107-109), the Soviet Economic System (p. 110-114). I wrote Soviet Leaders Notes on the whiteboard, so if you missed class today, please get these notes from a classmate. I were also supposed to go through Changes to the Soviet System After Stalin (p. 116-117) and Gorbachev to Collapse Notes (p. 118-121). Your homework tonight is the Economic Planning in the USSR (p. 122-129) section of your study booklets. I did a homework check on your Chapter 5 Key Terms and Questions.
