I showed you a video from the CBC News in Review series on "9/11: The Day that Changed the World" (this video was from five years after 9/11). Post-9/11, the United States passed the USA PATRIOT Act and began to engage in wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Out of these conflicts the US captured prisoners in their "war on terror". Some these "unlawful enemy combatants" were detained at Guantanamo Bay where they were interrogated using "enhanced interrogation techniques". I showed you a reaction video on the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee's Report on Torture.

You got your Unit 3 WRA II Essays back, finally. I also handed back all of your homework checked work. I took in your Chapter 18-19 Key Terms and Questions for your last homework check in Social 10-1. I had you write a Unit 4 partner test for part of the remainder of class time, and then afterwards we played a few rounds of Kahoot review games. Tomorrow we'll start a film study of "Contagion".

We started a film study of "Citizen Four" the 2014 Academy Award Winner for documentary feature on Edward Snowden. We'll finish off this film study tomorrow. You're writing your Trial Final Exam on Wednesday, June 8th, this test wipes out your lowest major test mark. I'll probably have a print out of all of your tests that you've written this semester, and you'll have to determine which one you want to be wiped out.

I started Social 30-1 material yesterday, so if you missed class today, you'll have some catching up to do this week. I gave everyone who came to class on Monday a Social 30-1 workbook for IB History students, that is yours to keep. 

If you missed class yesterday, you need to come to my classroom to pick up your 30-1 workbooks. Your next class is Thursday, May 19th. 

I reviewed the following content yesterday: 

• 19th century political spectrum (and their view on change; along with some quick review of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic era, specifically the Congress of Vienna)
• 20th century political spectrum (I also talked about classical liberalism = economic conservatism, modern liberalism, and the transition from classical liberalism to welfare capitalism to modern liberalism--which created the welfare state. Remember: welfare capitalism is synonymous with welfare state)

We continued with the illiberalism theme today by setting the post-9/11 anti-terrorism legislation in historical context. We continued examining the mixed economy today. I went through a detailed handout on monetary and fiscal policy. I gave you a booklet on democratic socialism and the mixed economy. I also showed you a couple of videos from the 60 Minutes TV newsmagazine show, one called "Dutch Treat" and "Welfare a la carte". We'll begin looking at the command economy tomorrow.

In connection with watching "Shipbreakers" last week, and talking about the life cycle of a ship and the sustainability of the shipbreaking industry, I thought it would be interesting to look at another example of an industry that has environmental consequences that are sort of "out of sight, out of mind". I'm talking about e-waste. We watched a short excerpt from the CBC News in Review on "Electronic Waste and China". You wrote your Unit 3 WRA I today in the Blenheim Room. When you returned to the classroom you got your Unit 2 WRA II Essays back. I did a homework check on your Chapter 9 Key Terms and collected your USA-Canada Comparative Government Assignments. We continued exploring the theme of illiberalism today, by looking at post-9/11 anti-terrorism legislation. In order to better understand why the United States and other western democracies passed legislation that began to restrict individual liberties, we need to put 9/11 in historical context. In order to do this, I had to show part of a documentary called "9/11: The Day that Changed the World". I also showed part of a documentary called "Unconstitutional", which shows the implementation of the Patriot Act and its impact.

I showed you part of the documentary "9/11: Day that Changed the World" today. We should be able to finish this documentary tomorrow. This week, we will be covering Social 30-1 material related to crisis situations and what impact that has on civil rights and civil liberties.
 

IB 20 HOTA

I wrote out notes on the board today covering American political parties after George Washington's farewell address. As you should have seen, some of the political parties that emerged after Washington finished his second term, didn't last long (the Federalists), the Democratic-Republicans went through many changes over the years, but are the origins of the modern Democratic Party. The Republican Party emerged in 1856, and successfully elected their presidential candidate, Abraham Lincoln in 1860. Many of the topics that I covered in the lecture will be covered in Grade 12. We will talk about the Whigs, the Know-Nothing Party (the American Party), and the Free-Soil Party when we discuss American expansionism in the weeks to come.

You wrote an analysis of a propaganda poster today for part of the class, and then we watched a short video from the CBC News in Review series that looked at "9/11: The Day that Changed the World". Please make sure that you have all of the answers to the video questions, and that you have read the entire package. You need to understand the historical context of 9/11 in order to understand the American political response to the terrorist attacks. In the days to come we'll examining the USA PATRIOT Act, the Anti-Terrorism Act, no-fly lists and other restrictions to civil liberties that have occurred in Canada, the United States and even the UK. You'll be writing your Unit 3 WRA II Essay on Monday, you will not have access to the essay source in advance.

I showed you your results for the Unit 2 Final Exam at the beginning of the class, along with your current mark in the course. I finished off the PowerPoint on "Internationalism and Nationalism" today as well. I gave you the Unit 3 WRA II Essay question sheet today (one day in advance). You will be writing this essay on Tuesday, December 17th. Please check the wiki for some ideas on writing the Unit 3 essay, argumentation and evidence.
