We'll be going to the library on April 24th (our only research period).

You spent most of this class in the library doing preliminary research on your chosen topic for your Unit 2 Dossier Assignment. If you are in my Period 1 class, we had to spend some time drawing lots and drafting topics, but you still had some time to find some books in the library and get some work done today. This will be the only class period that you will get to work on this assignment. Your Unit 2 Dossier Assignments will be due on Tuesday, December 6th.

This should help Social 20-1 students who are working on their Unit 2 Dossier Assignments. Of course, if you use Chicago or MLA, the citations may look different. 

IMAGE CITATIONS IN APA FORMAT:

STEP 1

Most of you will probably use Google for your image search. Just type in your image search term. I typed in The Holocaust. 

STEP 2

A bunch of different images will pop up. Just click on one that you like. I clicked on the first image and a pop-up screen will show you the image more closely. 

STEP 3

Click on "View Image". In the address bar you will see a specific URL for the image. This is what you need for your image citation. It should end in either .jpg or .png. or .svg or some other file extension that indicates that it is an image file. 

STEP 4

If you're working in Microsoft Word, click on the References tab. You can select the Style of citation here (MLA, Chicago, APA, etc.). If you need to insert an in-tezt citation, you click on Insert Citation. If you want to start building a Bibliography, you can Insert Citation or Manage Sources. 

STEP 5

You'll get a pop-up dialogue box like the one pictured below. I filled in the fields for the image that I picked. There are also online citation machines available as well, such as EasyBib (http://www.easybib.com/)

I showed you a video from the Turning Points of History on the atomic bomb building project. You should have taken notes on this topic while you watched the video. I also introduced you to the Unit 2 Research Project. If you're in my Period 1 class we didn't get to the topic draft, so we'll have to do that tomorrow. We're booked into the library tomorrow to do some preliminary research on your chosen topic. Period 1 and 4 class: please come to my class first tomorrow, and then we'll go down to the library together (Period 1 after we do the draft).

We finished off the BBC documentary "10 Questions About Democracy". These questions, plus your printed of political compass. I next talked about "Types of Democratic Systems" today, but didn't quite finish it.

I went through the system of checks and balances and separation of powers in the American political system today. If you haven't read pages 216-218 (Types of Democratic Systems) in your Social 30-1 study booklet yet, please make sure that you read, highlight and annotate this section of your booklet. We also talked about American overseas territories such as Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa and Puerto Rico, and the rights of people on these islands. In most cases they are American citizens, but as we pointed out today, many of these American citizens don't get to vote for President. I also wrote four questions on the board, and you were to pick two questions to answer on a Post-It note. I broke you into groups to discuss the answers to the questions, and then we had a brief class discussion about it. It's probably a good idea to get a partner for the USA-Canada Comparative Government Assignment right away.

As we will see, public support for the Vietnam War changes over time as more and more American soldiers are killed. We see a growth in the anti-Vietnam War demonstrations, and the media also played a role in the turn of popular opinion against the war. I REALLY recommend that you have a look at the this series of photographs from the Vietnam War era, pretty powerful imagery (make sure that you read the captions too). Here is a link to the NPR that explains the story behind the photograph below, definitely worth the time to read or listen to the podcast, and make sure that you look at the photo gallery of Eddie Adams' photographs of the Vietnam War.

The above photograph is of Phan Thị Kim Phúc, O.Ont (born in 1963), she is a Vietnamese-Canadian best known as the child subject of a Pulitzer Prize winning photograph taken during the Vietnam War on June 8, 1972. The iconic photo taken in Trang Bang by AP photographer Nick Ut shows her at about age nine running naked on the street after being severely burned on her back by a South Vietnamese napalm attack. Contrary to popular myth, the US Air Force were not involved in the attack, and only two US troops were within 60 miles (97 km) of the scene, neither of whom had any say in the bombings. Still, it is a powerful image associated with the war.
