March 1


I went through a lecture on "The Causes of World War I" today in class. Please make sure that you do the reading on the causes of World War I that is in your blue study booklets (pages 85-97) by Monday's class. Next week, you have two assessments while I'm away. You're writing the Chapter 3-4 Test on Tuesday, March 6th and the Unit 1 Final Exam on Wednesday, March 7th, please see the study guides for both of these exams below.

This quiz will be on Tuesday, March 7th. It will consist of a matching section (10 key concepts) and a short answer section.
  • make sure that you study the PowerPoint presentation "Contending Loyalties"
  • make sure that you have read Chapters 3 and 4 (it is all testable material)
  • know the key concepts/key terms from Chapters 3 and 4 (please see the Unit 1 Worksheet for these)
  • study your answers to the Chapter 3 and 4 questions from the Unit 1 Worksheet (all could potentially be on the quiz)


Make sure that you have read Chapters 1-4 in Exploring Nationalism. Please make sure that you know the key concepts from Unit 1 (see below). Also review the PowerPoint presentations that you should have in your notes. They are also on the Social 20-1 wiki under Unit 1 Presentations.

I split you into two groups today so you can start to prepare for next Tuesday's debate on the following topic: BIRT globalization benefits the world's cultures. I recommend that you set up Google Doc groups to share your research with one another. Please check the Social 10-1 wiki page called 1st Debate to see the teams. Please decide how you will be delivering your speeches during the debate. Please be ready for tomorrow's Chapter 3-4 Test (the study guide is posted below).


This test will be written on Friday, March 2nd. It is a matching test with a long answer section. 


  • Know the key terms from Chapter 3-4
  • Be able to answer the Questions for Inquiry in Chapters 3-4 (they appear on p.49, p.53, p.58, p.73, p.80)
  • Know relevant case studies from Chapters 3-4: the Francophones, the Aborigines and the Lubicon, as well as other relevant examples related to assimilation, marginalization, accommodation and integration

Don't forget that your Vietnam War Assignment is due on Monday, please see it below. On Wednesday, March 7th you'll be writing a WRA I on the Cold War. I'll review how to write one of these assignments with you next week.
