December 19

I went over some loose ends today with our Rights and Responsibilities unit, so you need to get these notes from one of your classmates if you missed today's class. I also went over the study guide for the unit final, and gave you some direction with regard to your in-class position paper. Study tonight, and prepare for your essay!

  • Rights and Responsibilities Unit Final is tomorrow (December 20th)
  • Rights and Responsibilities In-class Position Paper is on Thursday, December 21st

We finished watching "The Corporation" today in class. If you're interested here is a hyperlink to the website for that film: click here. Also, there are some very well written articles about the role of corporations in our lives, they can be found at the Global Issues website. We started watching "An Inconvenient Truth" today as well. We will finish this film tomorrow, and I will do a short lecture on sustainable development tomorrow (time permitting).

---------------------
A better way to organize that first paragraph is the following: hook, significance of the issue, describe the two perspectives on the issue and arguments related to each side of the issue (making sure that they lead well into your thesis), your thesis, your arguments.

If you need the entire period to finish the test, you can have it (I doubt that you will need it).

After Thursday, there's no new content for Social 10, just time to review.

hey dumb question but what did piere trudeau mean by bleeding hearts

i forgot what the constitution was of 1982 did it include the charter or was it just the charter

----------------------
Basically he was referring to people who didn't like the look of soldiers in the streets with guns keeping law and order as being wimps who were more concerned with their own lives and individual liberties than the needs of society as a whole.

Mr.Gm i've researched both sides of the argument (SS10 Essay), but don't have a clear desicion of which side to choose... Should i come see you in tutorial tommorrow, or just choose a side for a random reason?

Thanks

hey mr g do we need to know anything about the consitution and also the bill of rights is nothing entrenched so that means the government does not have to obey the rules that are mensioned in the document

Choose the side that you feel you can make the best case for, the best arguments for.

----------------------
The significance of this particular issue is whether or not the society's needs in times of crisis should outweigh the needs of the individual. Does the government need to guarantee the rights of all of its citizens in times of peace or in times of war, or is the government justified in sacrificing civil rights and liberties in times of crisis?

----------------------
Know that the CCRF is entrenched in the Constitution and that its predecessor, the Canadian Bill of Rights was not entrenched. Prior to the Bill of Rights, our rights and freedoms were upheld by custom.
