December 22

With all of my classes today, whether they be Social 10 or Social 20, we went over the final exam blueprint. I hope that you got some ideas as to how to prepare for your final exam. With both Social 10 and Social 20 students, we have finished the content of the course, now we have 5 days when we come back from the Winter break to review. I hope that you find some time to review and study over the break, not just for Social Studies, but for your other academic courses as well. That first week back will just fly by, and then it's off to exam weeks! Please don't rely on the review that we do in class to FULLY prepare you for your final exams, you'll have to study outside of class time to be ready for the final exam.

Just a reminder to Social 20 students: you will have your Topic B Final Exam on Monday, January 8th. Here is your study guide:

50-60 multiple choice questions
Monday, January 8th

  • glossary of key terms (know them well!)
  • themes (diversity, disparity, interdependence, etc.)
  • demographics
  • demographic key terms (infant mortality rate, death rate, natural increase, etc.)
  • population pyramid (be able to analyze)
  • demographic transition model (know the various stages, be able to analyze)
  • Thomas Malthus
  • geographic regions (DCs, LDCs, LLDCs, First World, Third World, North/South divide)
  • be able to distinguish between DC and LDC using statistics
  • appropriate technology
  • foreign aid (different types, different situations when aid is given; effectiveness? criticisms of foreign aid; would make a good “speaker” question)
  • demographic pressures on the land and resources
  • quality of life and standard of living
  • environmentalism
  • greenhouse effect, global warming, climate change
  • environmental pressures (deforestation, desertification, etc.)
  • availability of food (undernourishment, food consumption, SNU, etc.)
  • food production issues (production, price, cash crops, subsistence agriculture)
  • world health issues (WHO, malaria, HIV/AIDS, sanitation, clean drinking water)
  • resources and development (industrial development, sustainable development, renewable energy resources, alternative energy sources)
  • development and the role of multinational corporations in the developing world
  • IMF and World Bank (what are they? what do they do?)
  • GNP and GDP (what's the difference?)
  • poverty reduction in the developing world

Please enjoy your Winter break. Enjoy your holidays!

wow.. random comments much?
K.. well Im having a problem getting the yousendit link to work.. I set aside this entire day just to study and it wont work! I don't have the topic a study guide.. and I'm not sure what I should study...
Whenever I press the link, it just doesnt load. It opens a page, but nothing is on it.. just a blank screen. I've pressed it a few times, and im worried that the more i press it, the less downloads I'll get. But I really need it to study.
Ack!!

Please send me an e-mail directly. The "YouSendIt" was only up for 7 days, it's probably expired now, and that's why you're having problems.

SS10
------------------
You will be missing LOTS of review. I will not be introducing new material, just reviewing the ENTIRE course in 5 days. You will miss out on some review games, depending on how many days you miss.

Could you please define these : DCs, LDCs, LLDCs. What are they short for again? Developed countries...

---------------
DCs= developed countries
LDCs= less developed countries

LLDCs= least developed countries

LDCs and LLDCs are both in the developing world, but it's a way of distinguishing between the poor and the poorest nations of the world.

Mr.G, i won't be attending class on the first 2 days of school in january. (I am FH). So i was wondering if i could get some review stuff or something, because when i come back, i won't be able to review the stuff you sent me. Hopefully this comment made sense...

You will miss out on a review game called "Find the Fib". The preparation for the game will take place on Monday, and we'll be playing it on Tuesday. When you come back on Wednesday, we'll be preparing Jeopardy questions. I guess I could send the "Find the Fib" statements on to you (which I'll be doing for everyone).

Can you give a real life example between a LDC and LLDC; please. =)

-------------------------
Examples of LDCs would be countries like Guatemala, Honduras, or Bolivia (among others). They are poor nations, make no mistake.

Examples of LLDCs would be Mali, Sierra Leone, Niger, Haiti. These nations rate VERY low on the Human Development Index (HDI).

For Soc 10, how much about the second world war do we need to know? Just the battles Canada was involved in and the home front? or do we need to kno about things like the Soviet-Nazi non aggression pact?

Kevin Gilchrist said...

---------------------
Look at the Social 10 Final Exam Blueprint. The key thing in the curriculum is Canada's role and contribution in WWII, so the first part of your question applies. You need to know what battles Canadians were involved in, and what contribution Canada made to the war effort.

What is the IMF and what does it stand for (defination)?

Kevin Gilchrist said...

What is the IMF and what does it stand for (definition)?
-------------------
The IMF is the International Monetary Fund. The primary mission of the IMF is to provide financial assistance to countries that experience serious financial difficulties. In order to get financial assistance countries who need the help of the IMF tend to need to make reforms to their economic system (such as devaluing their currency). Basically, they will give loans to developing nations, but the developing nations need to meet certain conditions in order to get the money. Does this help? I can give you a more technical answer, but I thought that this would be a good start.

Anonymous said...

yeah that helps. another question.. who was Thomas Malthus?

Anonymous said...

"poverty reduction in the developing world"
what o you mean by this?

Anonymous said...

On the Social 10 Final, will there be questions where we need to know the specific dates of events?

Kevin Gilchrist said...

who was Thomas Malthus?
-------------------
He's on pages 33-34 in your World Prospects textbook.

Kevin Gilchrist said...

"poverty reduction in the developing world"
what o you mean by this?

-------------------
What is poverty? What is the developing world? How do you reduce poverty in the developing world? Foreign aid (bilateral/multilateral), development programs, development assistance, appropriate technology, job training for women (remember the connection between a woman's education level and the number of children she has, and her ability to care/provide for them) are all ways to reduce poverty levels.

Kevin Gilchrist said...

On the Social 10 Final, will there be questions where we need to know the specific dates of events?

--------------------
It might help for WWI and WWII.

how many questions are gonna be on the test tommorow? (SS20)/ how difficult would you say it is? / if i fail it will it bring my mark down badly?

Anonymous said...

What is the role of multinational corporations in the developing world?

Kevin Gilchrist said...

how many questions are gonna be on the test tommorow? (SS20)/ how difficult would you say it is? / if i fail it will it bring my mark down badly?

-------------------
60 multiple choice questions.

It's a fair test.

It won't bring your mark down badly if you're failing already. It might pull your mark down a few percentage points if you fail badly.

Kevin Gilchrist said...

What is the role of multinational corporations in the developing world?

---------------------
Multinational corporations can provide employment in the developing world. Some countries offer tax holdiays to corporations so they will build factories in their countries. Corporations might move on to another country if the labor costs are lower though. There's more to it than this, but this should give you an idea.

Anonymous said...

is the test a lot of common sense?

Anonymous said...

What does Social 10 need to bring to class tomorrow?

Kevin Gilchrist said...

is the test a lot of common sense?
-------------------
You need to know your terms. You need to have done the textbook work that was assigned. You need to have paid attention during the films (not that there are questions directly from the films, but the films illustrated certain concepts), and you need to read the test carefully and use/interpret the information that is given to you. This test, much like the Topic B questions on the final exam gives you a lot of information that you should be able to understand and interpret.

Kevin Gilchrist said...

What does Social 10 need to bring to class tomorrow?

-----------------
Your textbooks, your binders, something to write with and something to write on, it's much like any other day.
