December 20

We finished watching "An Inconvenient Truth" today in class, and then tried to get through a presentation on sustainable development (I didn't finish it in either class). I have sent this presentation to you already, so please check your e-mail. I have a couple of quiz/activities for you to look at today. The first one comes from the companion website for "An Inconvenient Truth". At this website I would like you to take the quiz on carbon emissions, so from the main page click on the link labeled "Take Action" and then you should be able to find the quiz. In the drop down box for which U.S. state you live in, choose either Montana (MT) or Washington (WA), since topographically they are pretty similar to Alberta. The other activity that I would like you to try online tonight deals with the second topic that we dealt with in class today, and that is sustainable development. Please see how environmentally friendly your home is with this activity called "Is Your Home a 'Green' House?"

You wrote your Rights and Responsibilities unit final today in class. Your Rights and Responsibilities In-Class Position Paper is tomorrow (it will be written in R4).

Mr.G, i was checking over my notes for the essay (SS 10). but it seems like we have more room on the sheet than other times. If it just me, or is is supposed to be like that?

Thanks,

It's not a great idea to ask rhetorical or any other questions in your essays. Just concern yourself with the actual essay question.

Mr. G for my three points can i do several cases in which rights were taken away/suspended? Would that make a strong essay?

There might be a bit more space. You'll be stapling them to your essays this time, so it will really stand out if someone altered the size of the font to write more, or wrote out their entire essay on the question sheet (which is a big no-no).

Maybe. It depends on what points we're talking about.

Yes, I talked about that in class. Those are case studies and then you use specific examples and supporting evidence to illustrate how the government abused their power, and hence shouldn't be allowed to suspend civil rights.

The relocation of the Japanese-Canadians begins in early 1942.

Check your textbook. It should be over 8,500 "enemy aliens", but you'd have to look it up for the exact number.

There's a difference between being interned and having to register.

I haven't heard too many stories of disloyalty, but you may be able to find some if you dig deep enough. Mostly, the internment in WWI was the government bowing to public pressure and xenophobia, and hysteria of the time.

Hey Mr. G,

What's the typical order that you would put your arguements in in an essay. From strongest to weakest? Or is it the other way around?

Anonymous said...

can citizen's rights still be suspended under the Emergencies Act even though the Emergencies Act is subject to the CCRF. would suspending rights still be available to the government under the Emergencies Act.

Anonymous said...

If I was to try and justify why the government did what they did... can I just reason it out, or do I have to find a specific site saying why the government did such and such.

I'll help u with that :)

Ok so rank them from strongest to weakest. (1, 2, 3) [1 being the strongest]

Then in this order:

2 (U need to start off with something strong. Grab the readers attention)

3 (You're weakest argument. This one usually gets forgotten by most ppl)

1 (End with a BANG!!! =D)

Hope this helps

If need be. Don't think of the Charter as something that can never be ignored, it can be. That's what the notwithstanding clause is all about.

Try to reason it out. For most of the cases that the WMA is used it is pretty clear what motivated the government.
