July 23


I did a homework check on your Chapter 16 Key Terms and Questions. I gave you some time to work on your Chapter 17 Key Terms and Questions at the beginning of class. For Chapter 17 here is what you are responsible for:
1. Define the following key terms in Chapter 17:

  • universality
  • ratify
  • genocide
  • Falun Gong
  • prisoner of conscience
  • authoritarian

2. Answer the following questions:

  • What are human rights?
  • What declaration was passed by the UN regarding human rights?
  • Are all rights universal?

3. Take point form notes on the following sections:

  • human rights in China (chart)
  • UNHRC Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

4. Make sure that you have read the following sections:

  • human rights in Canada/the right to health care
  • spreading democracy in a global world

Prior to the break we watched a bit of the film "Blood Diamond" (and then finished watching it after the break). I will be doing a homework check on the "Blood Diamond" film study on Monday, so make sure that you have completed it. I also gave you your Chapter 18 Key Terms and Questions, here is what you are responsible for from Chapter 18:

1. Define the following key terms from Chapter 18:

  • UNICEF
  • hypothetical

  • refugee
  • IDP
  • gender
  • grassroots organization
  • advocacy
  • migrant worker
  • entrepreneur

2. Take point form notes on the following sections:

  • The Impact of War on Children and Youth
  • Refugee and IDP
  • Blood Diamond
  • Global Connections: Children as Refugees and IDPs

3. Make sure that you have read the other sections outlined on the Chapter 18 worksheet


  • Chapter 17 and 18 Key Terms and Questions are due tomorrow (July 24th)
  • "Blood Diamond" Film Study Questions are due on Monday, July 27th
  • Chapter 16-18 Quiz (key terms quiz, see study guide below) is on Monday, July 27th
  • Final Exam Part A (written component, 5% of final grade) is on Thursday, July 30th
  • Final Exam Part B (75 multiple choice questions, 20% of final grade) is on Friday, July 31st
