February 13

I gave you the results of your World Geography Test that you wrote yesterday. I collected and handed back your homework: the Chapter 2 Key Terms and Questions. We then started our film study of "Whale Rider" which we will finish on Tuesday. Please remember that you have your Illustrated Concept Map Assignment due on Wednesday, February 20th. Please check your e-mail because I am sending out the marking guide for this assignment. Also, on February 22nd you will write your Chapter 1-2 Quiz, here is the study guide for this quiz:

  • Study your Chapter 1 and 2 Key Terms
  • Review the case studies from the textbook in Chapters 1 and 2, specifically the Metis, the Francophones, the Hmong, and the Maori
  • Be prepared to answer any of the "Questions for Inquiry" from Chapters 1 and 2 (they are on the following pages: p.9, p.14, p.20, p.29, p.35, p.39)

I went over the structure of Canadian government at the beginning of class, and went through how a bill becomes a law, and gave you an assignment (Canadian Government Internet Assignment) that is due on Tuesday, February 19th. Also due on Tuesday, the American section of the Chapter 4 booklet (most of you have already finished this homework in class).

Mr.G, do we have to cite any sources of information we used for our Concept Map?

Yes, you must cite your images and any other sources that you may have used. How to cite your sources is in your student handbook/agenda. I went over this in class.

Mr. G i was wondering, if the linking words are longer are they better?

Mr. Gilchrist, we have to put the definition, the example, and the illustration of each topic on the poster and that's it right?
becuase some of the examples had really long definition or notes of some sort and im worried that mine will be too short because mine was straight from the textbook...(except the ones that wernt in the book)

Mr.G, for the Written Description of Concept Map, are we supposed to just explain our concept map and why we choose the examples we did? thanks

In a lot of cases I would agree that it might be better if they were longer, so it helps demonstrate your understanding of the connection between the concepts.

Yes that's right.
There's nothing wrong with using the textbook definitions, although it might be better if you put your own "spin" on them, to demonstrate that you understand what they mean.

Try to remember that it's a formal piece of writing. Yes, you describe the connections that you made between the key concepts, it also gives you a little bit more space to maybe describe those connections. It should be about 1 page in length.

Think of homogenization as a process, and the result is monoculture. Does this help?

The images typically represent the key concepts or the examples.

Yes, you've got it.

I'm not sure what you mean by "normal branches". You need to have linking words between ALL of your key concepts. Does this help? For example, you need to have linking words between globalization and its subconcepts of social globalization, economic globalization and political globalization. Then, you'd need linking words between social globalization and all of its subconcepts, and so on. Does this help?
