March 10

You got the results of the Chapter 3-4 Test and your Unit 1 Final Exam back today. I then started a presentation called "Allied Victory and the Paris Peace Conference". I will finish this PowerPoint presentation tomorrow. We'll be looking at the Paris Peace Conference in greater detail and specifically at the Treaty of Versailles.

We finished off our look at dictatorships today, by looking at the breakup of the Soviet Union. I collected the "Lenin and His Heirs" booklet for homework check marks, and returned some assignments that were taken in for homework yesterday. I gave you hard copies of the study guides for the Dictatorship Unit Final, which is on Monday, March 16th (here is the study guide) and for the Political Systems Unit Final, which is on Thursday, March 19th (here is the study guide). Tomorrow, we will be moving on to our economic systems unit.

I finished off the notes that I wanted you to add to your fiscal and monetary policy booklets today. Please make sure that you read and highlight these booklets completely. Like I said in class, if you read this booklet and understand this material extremely well you will get any questions on the Social 30 Diploma Exam dealing with these topics. I have sent you some fantastic notes on Keynes, Hayek and Freidman, so please check your e-mail. I strongly encourage you to do some investigating on your own time with regard to Keynes, Hayek and Freidman, a good website to check out is the companion website for Commanding Heights, where you can watch video clips from this show ("the Battle of Ideas" episode might be a good place to start). There are some questions on the Chicago School of Economics that I'd like you to answer (I will not be taking this in for a homework check, I will send the answers in a couple of days). This information will be helpful in preparing for your Position Paper #2 (which is on Monday, March 30th) and will deal with the role that government should play in the economy. I did a homework check on Chapter 9 and Case Studies 14 and 15, which I will give back to you tomorrow. I will be giving back your Position Paper #1, your USA/Canada Government Comparison Charts and your interim report cards tomorrow. Your homework assignment tonight is very light: you must complete the chart comparing Sweden and Canada on the back of the Democratic Socialism handout. Tomorrow, we'll start looking at command economies.
