March 9


I collected your homework assignments that were due today at the beginning of class. We then watched a video called "Joseph Stalin: Red Terror", and as you were watching this video, you were to complete the question sheet that went along with the video. After the video, I wrote some quick notes up on the board on totalitarianism and Stalinism. I then went through the Structure of the Soviet Government with you VERY quickly. Please remember that you have some homework tonight. I'll be taking in "Lenin and His Heirs" from you tomorrow. On Thursday, your Dictator Assignment is due (this is a two part assignment that you could complete with a classmate). One week from today is your Dictatorship Unit Final, please see the study guide below. Also, next Thursday is your Political Systems Unit Final (this covers both democracies and dictatorships), please see the study guide for this exam below as well.



Dictatorship Unit Final is on Monday, March 16th. It is 35 multiple choice questions and 1 written assignment. Please know the following:



  • types of dictatorships
  • characteristics of dictatorships (key ingredients/"recipe for a dictatorship")
  • techniques of dictatorships
  • advantages/disadvantages of a dictatorship
  • the individual's role in a dictatorship
  • similarities and differences between a dictatorship and a democracy
  • be able to draw upon case studies/examples (fascist Italy, Nazi Germany, Stalin's USSR)
  • techniques of dictatorship used by Mussolini, Hitler, and Stalin



The Political Systems Unit Final is on Thursday, March 19th. It is 50 multiple choice questions. It covers both democratic systems and dictatorial systems. Please know the following:



  • characteristics of democracies
  • types of democracies
  • advantages/disadvantages of democracies
  • advantages/disadvantages of direct democracy
  • advantages/disadvantages of representative democracy
  • be able to draw upon case studies/examples (Canada, USA)
  • understand other key concepts like first past the post, rep by pop, and proportional representation
  • understand the political spectrum and related concepts (for example, values associated with liberals, radicals, conservatives etc.)
  • types of dictatorships
  • characteristics of dictatorships (key ingredients/"recipe for a dictatorship")
  • techniques of dictatorships
  • advantages/disadvantages of a dictatorship
  • the individual's role in a dictatorship
  • similarities and differences between a dictatorship and a democracy

Most of today's class was spent writing your Unit 1 Final Exam. You will get the results of this exam tomorrow, as well as the results of your Chapter 3-4 Test. I also did a homework check on your Chapter 5 Key Terms and Questions. Your interim report cards will be going home on Wednesday.


Most of today's class was spent writing your Economic Systems Quiz. After finishing the quiz, I started going through monetary and fiscal policy. I'll continue this tomorrow. You have your Chapter 9 and Case Studies 14 and 15 due tomorrow.
