October 22

I started a lecture/presentation today on "The Legacies of Historical Globalization in Canada", which I will finish tomorrow in class. I also went through the format and expectations for the Imperialism Research Project, so if you were away today, you need to get those notes from a classmate. I also did a homework check on your Chapter 9 Key Terms and Questions.

  • Chapter 7 Quiz is on Wednesday, October 24th (please see the study guide below)

----------------
It's called the Columbian exchange because it was started by Christopher Columbus in 1493 (his return voyage to the "New World"). A physiocrat is someone who advocates for laissez faire economics. They believe that the government should leave business alone. Turgot, and Quesnay were two French physiocrats, and their work influenced Adam Smith. Does this help?

----------------------
They are related terms. The cottage system is the process of producing goods in the home, but cottage industry is used to refer to the tyoe of industries that produced goods in the home.

about the problem of ppl talking in class
maybe if u allowed us to listen to music, there would be fewer ppl talking, and the people that don't like to be disturbed by the talking could also focus on their work between headphones

just a suggestion

Listening to music is a distraction. If it were art class, then I could see the need. A lot of times you need to be reading or writing and you can't do that well if you're listening to music. Students often say that they can multi-task, but the whole multi-tasking argument is pretty weak too. You need to concentrate during class. The bottom line is that if you're talking in class, a lot of times you're not working. Sometimes it is on-task, for example, you're getting help from a neighbor or you're asking them a question. There are definite pockets of people that would rather chat it up than work in class. By Social 30, you need to be able to make good choices as to who you sit beside, because there is so much riding on your results in the course, you don't want to be sitting near people that you visit with too much. Some of you can't make those decisions for yourselves, I will be making them for you.

-thanks

----------------------
The Wealth of Nations is a book written by Adam Smith. In the book, Smith helped the lay down the foundation for the ideas associated with the economic system known as capitalism. Values associated with capitalism would things like: competition, profit motive, individualism, individual incentive among others.

Yes, the dots represent cities. If memory serves me right, not all of them get used in the map assignment. The dot in Egypt represents Cairo, but not also the Suez Canal, it's a canal, not a city afterall. As far as that dot in Northern Rhodesia, I'm not sure what it's meant to represent, what cities did you have to label? (I don't have a copy of that mapping assignment with me at home)
