November 24

In an effort to make my post quicker today, I'm going to combine the Social 10 and Social 20 post together. In Social 20 today I went over Woodrow Wilson's Fourteen Points. Social 20-3 and 20-4 students have the same homework assignment: please send me 7 high quality Jeopardy questions by e-mail before Saturday night at midnight, so we can play review game next week. Social 10 students I will probably send out the presentation that I started in class today over the weekend, because I didn't finish it. We'll be starting Rights and Responsibilities next week. Please check previous posts for a list of upcoming important dates for both Social 10 and 20 students.

Chronological order is a good idea of organizing things within your essay or even within a paragraph.

The CBC News In Depth website should be able to answer this question for you. It covers the most recent governments, and that's sufficient.

one site says in the 1921 election the liberals won 116 seats, the Conservative 50, the progressive 64, and other. It says the liberals were one off a majority, but isn't it two off? Or is there something in affect at the time that affects the number of seats you need to have for a majority?

Anonymous said...

*other had 5 seats

do we have to use the computer tomorrow, for writing the essay?
or could we write it out by hand?

Anonymous said...

do you want us to meet in the Blenheim room, or do you want us to come to class first?

Do you want us to double space our typed out essay?

You have to use the computer and type it out. Go directly to the Blenheim Room tomorrow.

PM Joe Clark's vote of Non-Confidence was overrated... j/k. :p.

anyways, I can't find another good example of a government being toppled by a non-confidence vote.

Thanks,
SS 10-1

Thank You,
SS 10-1

ps: Do we go directly to the bleinheim room, or meet in the r4 room first?

Anonymous said...

hey mr g. do u have a link for finding previous non-confidence vote losers?

will you teach us how to write a position paper where you shot down the opposition's points? Or is it up to us to learn by ourselves?

You have to find a point where it makes logical sense to break a paragraph into two. I'm curious about what you mean by "I have a really long paragraph for one argument". You're not allowed to have any paragraphs written ahead of time on the question sheet that you bring in to the Blenheim room.

Please go directly to the Blenheim room at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow.

Other than the ones that I gave you already, no. You can look at some Parliamentary history websites that might be helpful though. The Parliament of Canada website might have some information, as might Nodice or others.

I'll give you a quick example of a "negative argument", which is sort of what you're talking about. Let's say that your position is that minority governments are beneficial to the Canadian parliamentary system. You could use an argument that the other side of the issue might raise(that minority governments are detrimental) such as: minority governments are ineffective due to the fact that they are so short-lived they have not contributed greatly to Canadian society. In other words, minority governments last for such a short time they can't achieve much in the way of significant legislation. You would then go on to refute this argument by using examples/pieces of evidence to support your argument/position (same sex marriage legislation, Old Age Security benefits, Canada Pension Plan, Medical Care Act of 1966, abolishment of capital punishment, etc.)

Does this help?
