Save that for English class. Please don't do that to your Social Studies teacher.

-----------------
Yes, but you have to bring them. We don't have enough for a class set or anything like that. So it's your responsibility to bring them.

Look up "Kipling" in the index of your textbook. Go to the pages where Kipling was mentioned. Read it. If you still don't understand, go to an outside/another source.

do we have to know anything about the BNA act for the unit test on wednesday?

---------------------
Check the PowerPoint entitled "Canadian Sovereignty". You need to know information from that presentation related to the BNA Act.

-------------------------
Yes. You can only write on the front side of the paper too.

I'm sorry, I don't have a copy of the map with me at home. The Prime Meridian (longitude that goes through Greenwich, England) is sort of directly north of Morocco. Count the degrees in intervals of 10 after that.

I'm posting some maps to help you find these places. Djibouti is near the "horn of Africa", so near Somalia. Swaziland is near South Africa and Mozambique. Basutoland changed its name to Lesotho (its current name). Lesotho is completed surrounded by South Africa, it's very tiny. Nyasaland would be near Rhodesia.

This may be a silly question, but do we need to have a bibliography for our essay on monday?

Anonymous said...

for the essay notes were allowed to bring in to class you said they had to be hand-written. does that mean cursive writing or printing

Kevin Gilchrist said...

This may be a silly question, but do we need to have a bibliography for our essay on monday?

--------------------
Typically, no. Unless you're quoting someone else's ideas, you need to give credit where credit is due. If you're concerned about this, please ask during class on Monday, and I can help you out.

Whatever is easier for you to read.

Yes.

Send me an e-mail and I will send it to you again.

Kevin Gilchrist said...

---------------------
Yes it did. The BNA Act gave Canada control of its domestic affairs.

Kevin Gilchrist said...

what are domestic affairs?
--------------------
Anything that takes place within Canada. For example, any laws passed by any level of government would be considered domestic affairs.

Kevin Gilchrist said...

-----------------
For the first one, you will write in the classroom, with subsequent essays it will be done in the computer lab, so this won't be an issue. You will probably want to bring pencils, pens, erasers, and paper on Monday. You can write it in pencil or pen, but I would like you to use a different color when you do your editing, so it shows me what errors you were able to catch on your own.

Kevin Gilchrist said...

-------------------
Not a bad idea to use a quote, but just be careful to use a quote that is on topic, not taken out of context, and "fits" with the rest of the flow of your essay.

Kevin Gilchrist said...

can you give us an exampple of a 'hook'?

--------------------
Not really. I will tell you again what a hook is though. A hook is something that grabs the reader's attention. In music, a "hook" is the catchy part of a pop song that you find yourself singing for no apparent reason in the shower. A hook is designed to stick in your brain. You have to make your essay stand out from the rest, and a hook is something that can give your essay personality and character, and make it truly unique.

what does "full recognition as an autonomous nation" mean??

Kevin Gilchrist said...

whats the diff between the statute of westminster and resolution IX?

---------------------
In March of 1917, British PM David Lloyd George invited the leaders of the various British Empire countries to London to take part in the Imperial War Cabinet. Canadian PM Robert Borden drafted Resolution IX and it was seconded by Jan Smuts the Defence Minister of South Africa. Resolution IX demanded that the dominions (the British colonies)be given full recognition as "autonomous nations of an Imperial commonwealth" with control over their internal affairs and "an adequate vote in foreign policy and foreign relations." The British Empire would in effect become a commonwealth of nations, an alliance of independent nations with common bonds working together for mutually beneficial trade anf foreign policies. Resolution IX was passed. The details were to be worked out at a later date. They were with the passing of the Statute of Westminster (1931). The Statute of Westminster gives Canada and other dominions control of their foreign affairs. I typically tell students that "Resolution IX was a promise, and the Statute of Westminster was the fulfillment of that promise" (I'm quoting myself here). Hope that helps.

It's probably a little late, since you write the position paper in the first period. It can't hurt to have it checked though.

Please see the 3:04 p.m. post. It's very wordy, and I talk about Resolution IX there.

I guess that you mean the Homestead Act. This was a development that gave women some property rights. Please check your textbook in Chapter 8 where they discuss social and political developments for women.
