November 1

You wrote your Imperialism Unit Final today in class. You will get the results of this test tomorrow. Please make sure that you complete your chapter 13 Theatres of War chart for tomorrow's class. I will be doing a homework check on this. We will also finish the film "Joyeux Noel" tomorrow.

I did a quick homework check on the First Nations booklet at the beginning of class. You then moved into your country groups to teach other students about your country that you researched during the Imperialism Research Project. We will be doing peer evaluations tomorrow, and then we will be trying to make generalizations about the legacies of historical globalization and imperialism.

just out of curiousty, is "Joyeux Noel" almost a true story based on WW1? So they really didnt fight at all for few days? After Christmas, did they began to fight again?

No, you don't need to. Those are for your benefit.

Like I said, it's a mix of various stories from around the Western Front in WWI. Yes, they did stop fighting around Christmas for a day or two, but as you'll see tomorrow, once word gets back to the higher ups they put a stop to it by transferring men around. The Christmas Truce is a research topic that is available when we do a project that is coming up very soon. You could research for yourself to see how accurately the film depicts those events, and how much artistic license they took with history.

Really? On Western Front you would have battles like: Battle of the Marne, Battle of the Somme, Battle of Ypres, Passchendaele, Battle of Vimy Ridge, etc. On the Eastern Front the big one is probably the Battle of Tannenburg (but there are others). Gallipoli is a big one in the Dardenelles. I'm not sure what all is mentioned in Chapter 13 since I never bring that textbook home with me. There are some great hyperlinks here on the website that would be helpful, look under Social 20 links and then scroll down until you get to "PBS: The Great War" (a fantastic website) and go from there.
