November 29

We watched a documentary on the Three Gorges Dam Project in China for part of the class, and then I gave you the second part of the Topic B Outline. This part of the outline is due tomorrow.

We finished watching the film "Shipbreakers" today, and I delivered another part of the presentation called "Globalization and Sustainability" as well. We'll finish that presentation off tomorrow. Please remember that your TNC Dossier Assignment is due tomorrow.

It doesn't need to have pictures, but you could as part of the whole "dressing it up" idea of the dossier.

for the picture references, if we got them all from one site, can we just reference that site instead of individual pictures?

Yes. Just as long as you're not referring to Google as the website. Google is the search engine, they don't host the photos/images.

Mr. Gilchrist, I'm not really sure what you mean by how the TNC affects the lives of people economically, socially, and politically.

What should we put in the part that says we have to briefly explain the tnc? How long should it be?

I was just wondering how many major events do we need for the timeline? If we run out of space, where shall we put the stuff?

Think back to Chapter 1 in your textbook, or take a look at it again. Do you remember us talking about economic, social and political dimensions of globalization? In other words, social globalization, economic globalization, and political globalization. This might be a good place to start in order to understand what we're talking about. If you re-read that, and you're still not sure, then I'll try to explain in another way.

- Can we use a duo-tang?
- What do you mean by "Summarize points of view and perpectives of the transnational corporation that you have selected to research"?

------------------------
You should have a brief description of the TNC: when was this corporation created, headquarters, type of corporation (fields that it's involved in), types of products it produces, etc. Check the rubric to make sure that you're meeting requirements of the assignment, and then go beyond it, just to be on the safe side.

Can we put all the information in a duo-tang just like we did for the last project about European colonies?

----------------------
I'm not putting a minimum or a maximum on the timeline. See if you can find other places to put items from your timeline if you run out of space just as long that it makes logical sense.

I meant, what if we run out of places to put everything we are required to have on our folders.

-----------------------
-No. I gave you a file folder for a reason. It's called a "dossier assignment" for a reason. The dossier also has to be "dressed up" too, so you wouldn't be meeting major requirements of the assignment by throwing it into a duotang.
-As far as perspectives and viewpoints go with regard to your TNC: are there any controversies/criticisms of your TNC? If so, they can go into this section of the dossier.

---------------------
No. I just answered this question. Please see above.

--------------------
Oh I see now. This is where the creativity part of the assignment comes in. You can create more surfaces or inserts for that information. Typically, people don't just print things off and put them inside the file folder as individual sheets of paper (this doesn't help your mark). People typically do more of a "scrapbooking" kind of feel to it. Creating inserts for the dossier, and splitting information up into smaller, easier to read sections with headings, and just being really creative with the project.

On the Nov. 23 blog, you said that the question: "How did this TNC evolve into a prime example of economic globalization?" just means how did that company evolve into the global company it is today.
But don't we cover all that in the company's history and early development and expansion part?

Anonymous said...

i dont know what to say for the question: how has the TNC affected people's lives economically, politically, and socially?

Anonymous said...

and also the next 2 questions mean basically the same thing..
-how has this TNC affected the lives of consumers?
-how has this TNC affected the lives of people in developing countries?

can we combine these 3 questions?

Yes, I think I also said that there will be some overlap.

Mr. Gilchrist, this TNC project you are making us do. I kinda get that most of these questions aren't things you can just reasearch. Is this project supposed to be about what you infered from the information, and that we are supposed to make a connection with what we read?

mr. g, i recall you telling me that i could create a map to use for my TNC dossier assignment on wikicommons. i'm on the site, but i dont see an option to create my own map. detailed instructions would be appreciated.

You can't make maps there. You can get a mp from there, and color it using a program like Fireworks, or maybe even Paint.

If you've done some research and reading about your TNC, it should be pretty clear what impact it has had on people's lives.

------------------------
No they don't. The first one is talking about consumers in the developed world, and the other one is talking about people in the developing world, maybe people who have been affected by the TNC.

If you done some research and reading about your TNC, you should be able to answer the questions using that information/research.

i'm afraid i dont really know what youre talking about. i know what fireworks and paint are, but is mp a misspell of "map" or something else?
if it is a misspell, i still need to mark the locations on the map, will i be able to do that in wikicommons or must i do that in paint/by hand?

one final question, is there any good timeline generators that i could find online? i remember doing a timeline for the imperialism project by hand, and it took too long.

Mr. G, for referencing a magazine, I look in my agenda and I have to specify the pages I used... what if I used practically every picture on every page, do I have to specify which pages, or can I just say all pages were used?

Yeah, that was a typo. It was supposed to say map. Right click on the map, save it to your computer. Then you'd have to open up Paint (all PC's have this program that run Windows has this program). You'll still have to use this program to color in your map.
Other than www.xtimeline.com, I don't know any other online timeline making sites. You'd still have to make the timeline. It probably will take some time to do that. Just out of curiousity, why are you doing all of this the night before the assignment is due?

Cite the pages that you used, for example p.231-249.
