November 30

We finally finished the presentation "Globalization and Sustainability" today, and I will send it to you today, so please check your e-mail, and print this presentation off, with 4 slides per page. I also gave you the results of your Chapter 10-11 Quiz back today. I went over the ideas of Keynes and Hayek again, since a few of you made some mistakes with this on the quiz. I also gave you the Unit 4 Worksheet. There's no homework this weekend, other than preparing for your Unit 3 in-class position paper, which is scheduled for Wednesday. At the beginning of class I collected your TNC Dossier Assignment, if you didn't have it finished for today, and you end up handing it in on Monday, please know that you will be deducted 10% for it being late.

For most of the period we watched a video called "Food or Famine". We will finish this video on Monday. I also did a homework check on Part B on the Topic B Outline. You will get those returned to you on Monday.

I think that's in the presentation that I sent you on "The Nature of Poverty and Food". Talking about the "Village of 100", there is enough food to feed everyone, but it's not distributed equally. As far as statistics go, if we moved towards a vegetarian diet, there's enough food to feed about 7.5 billion people. I'm not sure if that's what you're asking, but there you go.

I'll try to answer these questions relatively quickly here. Here's a sample thesis statement if you feel that globalization is beneficial: "After considering both sides of the issue, it is apparent that globalization does contribute to sustainable proseprity for all people." Please make sure that your thesis statement is the last sentence of your first paragraph, and that your second last sentence of your first paragraph outlines your arguments that you will be discussing in greater detail in the subsequent body paragraphs. As far as arguments go, you have a lot to choose from. You can structure your body paragraphs around the three major global economic institutions: the IMF, the WTO, and the World Bank. You would be arguing for the benefits of these organizations, and the benefits that they have contributed to improving the lives of all people. Your first body paragraph could focus in on the IMF. In that paragraph you would have to discuss in detail three supporting details/examples/case studies to demonstrate how the IMF is beneficial. You would follow that same pattern for your subsequent paragraphs, except you would focus in on the WTO (use information from the WTO website for students, there's a link to it under Social 10 Links, or from the handout that I gave you on the WTO) and the World Bank in those body paragraphs. You could also use as the focus/argument for a body paragraph, the benefits of economic trading blocs, like NAFTA and the EU. You would have to use specific details/information to demonstrate how these economic trading blocs have benefited people. So, you could use some of the statistics on NAFTA that I gave you in one of those PowerPoint presentations. Or you could discuss the benefits of the EU, and use the Republic of Ireland as a case study/example. You could also discuss the benefits of transnational corporations as an argument in one of your body paragraphs and use some information from the film "Globalisation is Good", especially the case of Nike in Vietnam that is in that film. So, you can see that there's lots of potential arguments and case studies/examples that you can use. Not exactly a short answer, but there you go.

If I'm in class on Monday, I will. If I'm not there on Monday, you'll have to do without my advice this time around.
