May 17

I started Social 30-1 material yesterday, so if you missed class today, you'll have some catching up to do this week. I gave everyone who came to class on Monday a Social 30-1 workbook for IB History students, that is yours to keep.

If you missed class yesterday, you need to come to my classroom to pick up your 30-1 workbooks. Your next class is Thursday, May 19th

I reviewed the following content yesterday:

  • 19th century political spectrum (and their view on change; along with some quick review of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic era, specifically the Congress of Vienna)
  • 20th century political spectrum (I also talked about classical liberalism = economic conservatism, modern liberalism, and the transition from classical liberalism to welfare capitalism to modern liberalism--which created the welfare state. Remember: welfare capitalism is synonymous with welfare state)
  • economic spectrum
  • the techniques of dictatorship
  • economic-political grid (democratic socialism, democratic capitalism, dictatorial socialism and dictatorial capitalism, plus examples of each)
  • economic values of a command economy, a mixed economy and a market economy

I had you read a short summary from the CBC News in Review, and then I showed you a documentary called "9/11: The Day that Changed the World". Please remember that you are writing a WRA I (30-1 students) or an Assignment 3 (30-2 students) on Thursday, May 19th.

Since we'd talked about the issue of resource development last week, I thought that it would be prudent to show you a video from the HBO series "Vice" and episode called "The Resource Curse" which examined a case study of an Exxon Mobil liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in Papau New Guinea, among others. I'm embedding this episode below.

In connection with watching "Shipbreakers" last week, and talking about the life cycle of a ship and the sustainability of the shipbreaking industry, I thought it would be interesting to look at another example of an industry that has environmental consequences that are sort of "out of sight, out of mind". I'm talking about e-waste. National Geographic Magazine had a feature on e-waste in their January 2008 issue that I would like you to read. Here is the hyperlink to the article: click hereI also showed you a short video on e-waste in China from the CBC News in Review. As you watched this video you should answered the video review questions. I gave you a copy of the Unit 4 Worksheet today as well. The Chapter 15 Key Terms and Questions are due next week on Wednesday, May 25th.

Please have a look at the upcoming important dates for Social 10-1 students:

  • Unit 3 WRA II Essay is on Wednesday, May 18th (please look at the sample student essays on the Social 10-1 wiki)
  • Unit 3 Final Exam (the study guide goes up tomorrow on the blog)
  • Chapter 15-16 Test is on Thursday, June 2nd
  • Social 10-1 Final Exam Part A is on Wednesday, June 8th

We continued topics that we started last week, namely illiberalism (you can also use the Civil Rights Movement as a case study for undemocratic actions/illiberalism) and the usage of the War Measures Act. This legislation was only to be used in circumstances of war, invasion and insurrection. In Social 20-1, you should have discussed the treatment of "enemy aliens" in WWI, and the internment of Japanese-Canadians during WWII. Today, we covered the FLQ crisis of 1970 in which Quebec Premier Robert Bourassa called in Canadian Forces claiming that the Quebec provincial government was facing an "apprehended insurrection". We watched a video from the Turning Points of History on the FLQ Crisis. As you watched this video, you should have filled in the blanks for the film study sheet in your Social 30-1 booklets.

I also did a homework check on Chapter 9 Key Terms and Questions, and the Civil Rights Movement Assignment at the beginning of class. Your Chapter 11 Key Terms and Questions are due tomorrow. You're writing your Unit 3 WRA I (if you're in 30-1) on Thursday. Social 30-2 students will be writing an Assignment 3 (three citizens question).

May 13

We have class on Monday, May 16th, we're starting Social 30-1 material then.

We finished off the "Globalization and Sustainability" presentation today.I will probably update this presentation to reflect new developments like the Sustainable Development Goals that were created I also gave you the Unit 3 WRA II Essay question sheet, and you had some class time to brainstorm in a small group about the source. You'll be writing this essay on Wednesday, May 18th in the Blenheim Room.

I went through definitions of liberalism and illiberalism today and talked about the War Measures Act and the instances in Canadian history when this legislation was used. Make sure that you read, highlight and annotate the Unit 3 Rights Notes (page 247) in your Social 30-1 workbooks.

Please check out the upcoming important dates:

  • Civil Rights Movement Assignment is due on May 16th
  • Chapter 9 Key Terms and Questions are due on May 16th

May 12

You wrote your Paper 3 exam today, so obviously you didn't have class today. You will have class again on Monday, May 16th, when we will start Social 30-1 topics.

You have a considerable amount of work to do over the next few days, so I gave you a work period today. Please look at the upcoming important dates.

Wednesday, May 11, 2016

May 11

There wasn't a class today because you are writing your Paper 3 tomorrow. I hope that you find some time to review the topics that we've instructed you to emphasize.

Please have a look at the upcoming important dates for IB 30/35 students:

  • Monday, May 16th: we're starting Social 30-1 on this day
  • Thursday, May 19th: more Social 30-1 content

I collected your TNC Dossier Assignments at the beginning of class today. If these assignments are handed in late, there is a 10% penalty per day that it is late. I started a new lecture today on "Globalization and Sustainability". The part of the lecture that I delivered dealt with sustainability, environmental stewardship, ecological footprint, and the sustainability of a particular industry important to economic globalization: container ships. We started watching the NFB film "Shipbreakers" today, and we'll finish it off tomorrow. By Friday, you will receive your Unit 3 WRA II essay question sheet. Please remember that you'll be writing the Unit 3 WRA II Essay on Wednesday, May 18th.

We watched a couple of videos from the BBC 20th Century History series called "One Man's Revolution" and "China Since Mao". I also recommended that you read some of the higher level reading articles in your Social 30-1 booklets today, "The Road to Prosperity" (on China), and another one from Unit 2 material ("The Causes of the Global Recession"). Also, we analyzed a couple of political cartoons out of The Economist that were published in 2009, on the 60th anniversary of the People's Republic of China. Remember, that China is our case study of an authoritarian state in Social 30-1. China is still a single-party state, in other words, only the Communist Party of China can exist, and all other political opposition is suppressed. China employs market socialism, wherein the state still largely controls the means of production and the degree of state owned enterprise's in the Chinese economy. I talked about CNOOC's purchase of Nexen as an example of a state-owned oil company purchasing a Canadian company. There are three big state-owned oil companies in China: CNOOC, SinoPec and PetroChina, so this links back to what I said about the economic reforms that have been introduced in China, and yet the government largely controls the economy and means of production. I also briefly touched about entrepreneurship in China, and used two companies TaoBao and Alibaba, both owned by Jack Ma.

  • USA-Canada Comparative Government Assignment is due on Friday
  • Civil Rights Movement Assignment is due on Monday, May 16th
  • Chapter 9 Key Terms and Questions are due on May 16th

I went through a PowerPoint presentation really quickly today called "Political Challenges to Liberalism". Most of the content in this lecture has been covered already in Unit 2 and Unit 3. We started a film study today of "Globalization is Good" that we'll finish on Monday. As I said in class, this documentary is out of date, but it gives a different perspective on globalization. It's a sarting point for researching different case studies that could potentially be used in your Unit 3 essay. Please remember that your TNC Dossier Assignment is due on Wednesday, May 11th. Assignments that aren't submitted on this day are considered late. A late penalty of 10% off per day that the assignment is late will be administered.

We went through the checks and balances that we see in the presidential democracy, and I assigned the USA-Canada Comparative Government Assignment in class today. This assignment is due on Friday, May 13th. We also watched some YouTube videos on criticisms of the electoral college system, and another video on how American citizens in American territories are unable to vote for the President, and yet another video on the curious case of the District of Columbia.
