February 24

Sorry for the late posting tonight. I went to watch some basketball with my son at Western Canada after school today...

Today I showed you a short video on the FLQ Crisis of October 1970 from the CBC News in Review. Then you wrote a quiz on French-English Relations. If you found this quiz difficult, you now have a better sense of how difficult quizzes and tests might be in Social 10. I also told you that on Thursday, March 2nd you will be having your Regionalism Unit Final. The format of the unit final is entirely multiple choice, with about 60-70 questions.

1. Regions of Canada (review your notes/worksheets and the PowerPoint presentation)

  • physiographic regions
  • climatic regions
  • physiographic regions (chart)
  • basic Canadian geography (provinces, territories, capitals, rivers and bodies of water)

2. Regionalism (review your notes/worksheets and the PowerPoint presentation)

  • what is regionalism?
  • causes of regionalism in Canada

3. Regional Disparity (same as above)

  • what is regional disparity?
  • what causes regional disparity?
  • "have" and "have not" provinces
  • what does the government do to ease regional disparity?
  • shared-cost programs
  • personal transfers
  • equalization payments
  • indicators/signposts of regional disparity
  • know the key concepts!!

4. French-English Relations (review notes from timeline assignment and the PowerPoint)

  • Treaty of Paris (1763)
  • Quebec Act
  • Constitutional Act
  • Act of Union
  • Confederation
  • Riel Rebellions
  • WWI Conscription Crisis
  • Quiet Revolution (1960-66)- Jean Lesage
  • FLQ Crisis (1970)
  • Parti Quebecois-Rene Levesque
  • 1980 Referendum
  • Meech Lake Accord
  • Charlottetown Accord-referendum
  • know the key concepts!!

5. Western Alienation (we'll be covering this topic next week)

  • Causes of Western alienation (root causes)
  • Development of Western alienation (Great Depression)
  • formation of regional political parties (UFA, Social Credit, CCF/NDP, Reform, etc.)
  • regional political party ideas/objectives

Here are some upcoming important dates for Social 10 students:

  • Promotional Brochure is due Monday, February 27th
  • Regionalism Unit Final is on Thursday, March 2nd
  • French-English Relations Timeline Project is due Monday, March 6th (the extra credit assignment is due on the same day, please provide a "hard copy" of your website, in other words burn it on to a CD-R.)

Today, I made sure that you understood the "political spectrum" during the French Revolution, and the revolutionary governments. I gave you two word search puzzles, which are due on Monday (if you missed today's class, please be sure that you get these puzzles from me on Monday, they are useful for review). The first 10 students on Monday that show me their completed word searches, with the answer to the puzzle's clue question written down will get a bonus homework check mark.

Someone told me about something funny to do with what we are learning about so here it is
Go to www.google.ca and then type in "french military victories", then press "I'm Feeling Lucky"
See what happens

another good one is to put in "failure" and do im feeling lucky.

for demographic characteristics, can we write about jobs and local industries?

Anonymous said...

Do you want our references to be on our brochure, or attached separately?

Anonymous said...

for the brochure, will you be marking the how well the brochure seems to "sell" the reason to an audience, or more of the information provided

is there a extra credit assignment for the timeline project?

Anonymous said...

By any chance Ottawa is part of the St. Lawrence Lowlands region??

Anonymous said...

I thought the due date for the extra credit was on the same due date as the rest of the brochure, but it says on the website that the due date is the week after. Which is right?

for the brochure references, do we have to do them in the proper format or can we just leave them as websites?

For our word searches do we come to you in tutorial or just the beginning of class??

I'll try to answer all of the questions:
1. Demographic characteristics wouldn't include jobs and local industries, that would go under economic characteristics.

2. References should be on the brochure, on the back page.

3. The rubric (marking guide) for the brochure assignment takes into consideration both what is presented and how it is presented.

4. There is no extra credit assignment for the timeline project.

5. Yes, Ottawa is in the St.Lawrence Lowlands region.

6. The extra credit assignment is due tomorrow (Monday) as well. I think I said that in class, but I may have mistyped it on the website.

7. All references must be cited using the method that is in your student agenda/handbook.

For Social 20 students: come see me at the beginning of class on Monday with your word searches.

How would you reference the pictures you used in the brochure?

Anonymous said...

Do you have to reference pictures you use, and if so, how do you reference them?

Kevin Gilchrist said...

Yes, you have to reference them. The easiest way is to follow the method in the student handbook. The reference will end with something along the lines of website URL retrieved from the Internet on insert date here.

I'm having trouble finding any statistical graphs or tables on the Cordillera region (for the brochure in SS 10-2). If I can't find any, how will this affect my project mark? Do you have any sites that you would recommend looking at for this information?

Kevin Gilchrist said...

Have you checked the Statistics Canada website?

Anonymous said...

I can't find any there either. =( What should I be searching for?

Anonymous said...

Statistics Canada doesn't seem to have population/demographic figures for specific regions, just provinces. Do you know where we could find population and demographic information tables or graphs for specific regions? (ex. Interior Plains)

yah and cordillera to!

Is there any possible way for me to come in during tutorial so I don't have to massacre in order to get bonus marks for the word searches?

can you give an example of how you would do an image reference? would it be like: Image retrieved February 26, 2006 from internet: (url goes here). most images dont really have an author, date, and title to them...

Anonymous said...

Please answer us, please

I'm in the 10-1 class and i was just wondering what the requirments for the extra assignment website are.

Kevin Gilchrist said...

You wouldn't be able to find stats for your particular region. Just use the stats for provinces that are part of your region.

5:21: the way you are citing the image reference is okay. Do it that way.

Social 10-1: with regard to the website, it's probably too late to do it. The website is due tomorrow. The website is an expansion of the information that is in the brochure. You would need at least four pages on the website: an index page, and three more pages, all corresponding to the three characteristics.
