September 7

Today we looked at individual identity and collective identities. We defined what individual identity meant, and we looked at the characteristics of your junior high schools with regard to collective identities. I also had you read a little bit more in Perspectives on Globalization (p.9-10). Have a great weekend!

I delivered a presentation/lecture today on the Renaissance and Enlightenment. I will be sending this presentation to you today. You do have a homework assignment this weekend: please complete the Enlightenment Thinkers chart that I gave you today in class.
  • Enlightenment Thinkers chart is due Monday, September 10th
  • Enlightenment Thinkers Quiz is on Monday, September 17th

Voltaire thought that human happiness was impossible because he felt that the actions of selfish people would spoil the well being of all their fellow human beings. He also felt that governments were so violent and organized religion is so corrupt that they ruin lives of millions through war and exploitation. Now, you have to put that into your words so it makes sense to you.

I think the key thing to focus on with Adam Smith and how his ideas differed from feudal society would be his opposition to mercantilism. In an absolute monarchy, the mercantilist system was prevalent. Smith was opposed to government intervention in the economy. I would look into those ideas. Does this help?

This may not be in your textbook, in fact I know that it isn't, these are just my thoughts on Quesnay: keep in mind that he's a forerunner to Smith, he's a laissez faire economist who is opposed to the mercantilist system (traditional economic system in absolute monarchy controlled France). According to Quesnay, government (and people/man) must follow nature's order (ordre naturel), government should follow laissez faire policy so that the ordre naturel could emerge.
