October 13

We did some more work on position papers in class today. We did one more exercise, and I also had you copy out some position paper essentials as well.

  • Identity Unit Final is on Monday, October 16th
  • Chapter 7 key terms and trench warfare notes are due on Tuesday, October 17th
  • the Position Paper Outline is due on Thursday, October 19th (I will be marking these outlines!)

This was your last class period to work on the French Revolution/Napoleonic Era Board Game project. I collected your Chapter 5 questions and gave you the results of the Nationalism Test. We will be talking about writing position papers and the Napoleon position paper specifically, on Monday, October 16th. Please bring to class the Napoleon position paper outline sheet (I will be sending this to you today) and the actual essay sheet to class on Monday.

Have a great weekend!!

Mr.Gilchrist, for our game board project for SOCIAL 20, can we use modern day map of Europe or does the map have to be one of the Napoleonic Era?

It would look better if it were of the French Revolution or Napoleonic Era.

I think you mean "mosaic". The word mosaic refers to tiny, different colored pieces that are put together to make a piece of art. In Canada, we refer to ourselves as being a "cultural mosaic", meaning there are different ehtnic groups in Canada, but together we form a unique picture of diversity. Does this help?

I'm assuming that you're a Social 10 student worrying about the Identity unit final on Monday. Study the dates that are in your French-English Relations PowerPoint presentation, those are the only dates that I can think of that you would need to know for the test.

-------------------
You'll want to start watching a Canadian TV channel with local, national and international news from a Canadian perspective. The following are channels (cable TV channel numbers): CFCN (CTV affliate) Channel 3, CBC Channel 6, Global-TV Channel 7, CityTV Channel 8, CBC Newsworld Channel 15.

Here's what will happen: you will come up to the front of the classroom and tell the class about a current events topic that relates to one or more of the units/themes that we will be studying in Social 10. Examples of units would be: sovereignty, regionalism, identity, or politics and government. You will give the class some background information about the event, and then tell us specifically what happened recently. Follow the 5W format (who, what, when, where, why). You should know enough about the topic that you would be able to answer questions from your classmates (or from me)about the event. All total, you should only be in front of the class for 5-10 minutes (depending on how many questions you have to answer, and the length of your news item). Please don't come up to the front of the class and read a newspaper article to the class; summarize it in your own words, and be ready to answer questions about the topic. Does this help?

thanks mr.g for the help, so would it work if i did my current event as: canada supporting north korea in the nuclear thingy.

--------------------------
"This irresponsible and dangerous act seriously undermines both regional peace and stability, and global efforts to halt the spread of nuclear weapons," Harper said in a statement.

It doesn't sound like he's being very supportive there, does it? Canada is going to be working with the United Nations Security Council to address the risks to Northeast Asia and beyond. Canada has been in favor of multilateral negotiations with North Korea since it was revealed that N.K. wanted to test a nuclear device.

Short answer: it would be okay to use this topic, but follow the story as it develops; what role is Canada going to play in this issue? Make sure that you make those connections to our sovereingty and politics and government units because those are your best connections on this topic.

-------------------------
They are very different. The Bi and Bi Commission was set up to investigate bilingualism and biculturalism in Canada; what opportunities were open to Francophones to learn French in other parts of the country, the use of French in government, among other things. The Bi and Bi Commission leads into the adoption of two official languages in Canada, funding for French and English language instruction, and finally to other initiatives like the packaging and labelling practices that we follow in Canada. The Massey Commission is also a royal commission, but that's where the similarities end as far as their recommendations go. The Massey Commission leads to the formation of the Canada Council which helps fund the arts in Canada.

That would be a reference to the Bi and Bi Commission that was set up by Lester B. Pearson. It's in one of the Canadian Identity PowerPoint presentations that I sent to you.

I'm not that big on dates really, but if you're going to study dates related to French-English relations, study those that appear within the presentation itself.

Kevin Gilchrist said...

That will help. Look over the map, don't spend too much time on this, maybe 10 minutes at the most.

Use the study guide! If it's not in the study guide then don't worry about it.

Kevin Gilchrist said...

---------------------
You shouldn't be too stressed or anxious about this test. If you know the material you should be fine. Sometimes people get anxious right before a test by someone who comes into the class right before the exam, and they want to ask a bunch of last minute questions. People like that tend to spread their anxiety to others, and stress other people out. Play the games that I sent out tonight. They're meant to be fun. One is a Jeopardy game (enable the macros) and the other is based on Millionaire. Have fun! Most importantly, relax!

Kevin Gilchrist said...

Students tend to do well because there just isn't as much material in this unit. It's one of my shorter tests, and it's very straightforward and fair.

I created that Jeopardy game last year, and we actually played it in class (I haven't been doing that much this year, I'm not sure why), and I actually had the songs play. When I sent it out, I had to take the songs out. Don't worry about those songs, obviously they won't be on the test. I put them into the game last year because I ran out of category ideas.

I'm confused about the free trade agreemeent. what is the whole thing really about? why does it seem that Canada didn't gain any major benefits and the USA recieved several benfits?

Kevin Gilchrist said...

-----------------------
Free trade is basically the removal of all trade barriers between Canada and the United States, there are no import duties, tariffs or taxes on goods being shipped between the two nations. There are a lot of people who feel that Canada lost a lot in the deal with the U.S. Now with NAFTA in place (Mexico has joined this large trading bloc), there is a great deal of integration with the U.S. economy. Roughly $ 1 billion worth of goods crosses the border between Canada and the U.S. every day. Another thing to keep in mind: The GST was brought in to replace a federal manufacturer's tax of 13.5%, and doing so, shifted the burden from private companies to individual consumers. The GST was brought in to compensate for import duties and exise taxes that were being lost under the original free trade agreement.

After doing the jeopardy game you sent SS 10-1, I am very unclear about John Diefenbaker and the NORAD, Bomarc Missile program, Avro Arrow Program and NAFTA.

Kevin Gilchrist said...

Hopefully you check the blog this morning to see my response (remember, if you post after 10 p.m. most nights I don't respond until the next morning). John Diefenbaker was PM of Canada in parts of the 1950s and '60s. Under his leadership the A.V. Roe (Avro) air reseach company was given a government contract to develop a state of the art supersonic fighter jet which would be used to intercept Soviet bombers over the Canadian Arctic. It was a very expensive program, so Diefenbaker scrapped the program. Instead he turned to a U.S. plan for missile defense. Canada bought $685 million worth of surface to air missles (SAMs) called Bomarc missiles which could be filled with nuclear warheads (they weren't). Canada lost a little bit of control over its own defenses, and the Avro program was scrapped (literally, they destroyed all pre-production models; the Avro Arrow was supposedly the most advanced supersonic jet of its time). NORAD was a air defence program as well. With NORAD a distant early warning line (DEW line) of radar stations was constructed in Canada's Arctic for the purpose of detecting a Soviet attack (whether it be missile attack or bomber attack). NAFTA is the North American Free Trade Agreement, which makes Canada, Mexico, and the USA one giant "free trade" zone where no country can impose import duties or taxes on goods shipped between countries. Please see my earlier comment on NAFTA.
